(NaturalHealth365) Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organism whose genetic material has been altered. They were first allowed into the United States food chain 17 years ago with the introduction of genetically modified soy and corn into the food chain and now make up 88% of U.S. corn and 94% of U.S. soy.
Who is responsible for all this poison? The major firms involved in developing GMO foods are Monsanto, DuPont, Dow Chemical, Bayer and Syngenta. And Monsanto, in particular, has donated significant funds to prevent GMO food labeling laws to be passed in California and Washington.

Since the introduction of GM foods, scientists have been noting a link between genetically modified organisms and the rise in a variety of diseases and conditions.
Animal studies have linked GM foods to allergies, infertility, breast cancer, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system. In fact, many scientists warn, ‘there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation.’
For example, world renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava having reviewed over 600 scientific studies concludes that genetically modified organisms are a major contributor to the sharply deteriorating health of Americans.
We must warn our friends and family – the science is clear.
There is a published human feeding study that revealed an issue caused by genetically modified foods. The gene that is placed in GM soy transfers into the DNA of our intestinal bacteria and continues to function.
This means that even after we stop eating these foods, we may still have potentially harmful proteins from the GM soy continuously inside of us. Scientists are finding toxins from GM foods in pregnant women and do not know of the potential issues it could be causing to the fetuses.
Corn lovers must be careful
Bacillus thuringiensis, which produces the Bt toxin in genetically modified corn products, is suspected of damaging the intestinal walls of newborns and young children. When damaged, the intestinal walls allow the passage of undigested foods and toxins into the blood – from the digestive tract – leading to allergies and autoimmune disease.
Also, since the blood-brain barrier is not developed in newborns, toxins may enter the brain causing serious cognitive problems. Bt toxin was found in: 93 percent of pregnant women tested, 80 percent of umbilical blood in their babies and 67 percent of non-pregnant women.

Choosing organic products is the best way to avoid genetically modified organisms in your food. In the U.S., organic foods are certified according to the USDA National Organic Standards, which do not allow for GMOs. Meats, cereals and juices that bear the USDA stamp are a safe bet.
If organic produce is sometimes outside of your budget, take a look at those little round stickers on your produce for clues. If the code is a four-digit code, that means the product was ‘conventionally grown’ – meaning that pesticides and herbicides were allowed to be used for that product. A five-digit code that starts with the number 9 means the produce was grown organically and meets the USDA national standards for not containing GMOs. A five-digit code that starts with the number 8 means that the product was genetically modified.
