(NaturalHealth365) This is a serious health warning for anyone eating conventionally-grown fruits and vegetables. The pesticides, used in conventional farming, have been linked to allergies, asthma and nerve damage . I’ve encountered many people who state they have been vigorously washing their produce to get the pesticide residue off. And, although this may seem like a good strategy – you cannot remove the pesticides that have been absorbed into the fruits and vegetables while they were growing.
The most important (personal) reason to eat organic food.
Scientists now know that some flowers, fruits and vegetables are actually quite good at phytoextraction (removing toxins from soil or water using plants) making them excellent contenders to remove toxic substances such as, lead and DDT from soil.
For instance, sunflowers are used to remove lead; while pumpkins and zucchini are used to extract DDT from soil. The DDT is not only contained in the pumpkins and zucchinis themselves, but also appear in the flowers. So be sure to check if the squash blossoms you are eating are organic.
Be warned – some foods are extremely toxic
Since some fruits and vegetables have more of an affinity for certain pesticides and metals – it is truly important to opt for organic as often as you can. This goes for baby food as well. If you are buying baby food or making it at home, using organic fruits and vegetables are essential.
Last year, the Environmental Law Foundation tested baby food containing carrots, peaches, pears and sweet potatoes. Lab results indicate between 2 and 29 micrograms of lead per serving which is much higher than the .5 micrograms per serving limit that triggers a Prop 65 warning in the state of California.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducts what they call a ‘Total Diet Study’ to check the amount of pesticides, mercury and other compounds and the information is published on their website. The current study posted on the site shows the following for baby food:
Baby formula – contains multi-residue methods for pesticides, chlorophenoxy acids and mercury.
Apple juice – contains multi-residue methods for pesticides, phenylureas, carbanates, ethylenethiourea, benzimidazoles, volatile organic compounds and mercury.
Vegetables and beef – contains multi-residue methods for pesticides, carbamates, benzimidazoles and mercury.
Adult fruits and vegetables do not fare much better. For instance, raw tomatoes and fresh cauliflower also tested for mercury and a variety of other pesticides. Fast food chicken nuggets, eaten by toddlers and adults also tested for mercury. Rice made the news last year for the amount of lead and arsenic that were found during testing.
Organic farming techniques ought to get national attention
Organic produce is grown with natural fertilizers such a manure and compost while weeds are controlled using crop rotation, hand weeding, mulching and tilling. Insects are managed by using traps and good insects. Organic crops must be grown in safe soil, have no modifications, and must remain separate from conventional products.
Studies on if organic produce contain more nutrients than conventionally grown produce are mixed. A study out of Stanford found that the nutritional value of most produce is essentially the same although this study has been criticized as the researchers did not perform actual analysis on food, but analyzed published studies and drew conclusions.
Editors note: When considering the conclusions of any scientific study – one must always consider the source.
Meanwhile the Soil Association Certification Ltd. – out of the United Kingdom – reported that organic crops were higher in essential minerals, phytonutrients, and vitamin C .
When I work with clients I ask them to eat as organic as their budget allows. I have helped many detoxify using CEASE and it’s helpful to eat as clean as possible. Since pesticides have been associated with a number of ailments and conditions, reducing them across the board makes sense.
