The placebo effect outperforms drugs and surgery

The Power of Placebo Effect(NaturalHealth365) Is it really possible for a fake surgery to be just as effective as a real one? Can fake pills actually eliminate pain – depending on their size and color? Recently, there’s been a wealth of scientific evidence to suggest that the ‘placebo effect’ is highly effective in treating pain, depression and even more serious health conditions.

For example, Dr. David Kallmes, a successful radiologist at the Mayo Clinic, decided to perform fake surgeries on back patients to see if they would recover just as well as the ones that received a ‘real’ procedure called, vertebroplasty – which is a special cement injected into the vertebrae. The results are truly mind-blowing!

The placebo effect is scientifically validated. In this experiment of 130 back patients, Dr. Kallmes admits:

”Patients who believed they’d been treated – but actually hadn’t – recovered as well as those who really did have the op.” He goes on to say…

‘There was no statistically significant difference in degree of pain relief between the patients who underwent vertebroplasty and placebo.

‘And more importantly, there was no statistically significant difference in improvement in function between the patients who underwent vertebroplasty and placebo.’

How do our beliefs affect our physical health?

In my opinion, if you suffer from any serious health condition, it is important to remember that our thoughts and feeling play a tremendous role in the healing process. Harvard medical school studies the placebo effect

Ted Kaptchuk, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, conducted a randomized clinical drug trial – with nearly a third of his 270 subjects complaining of awful side effects. All of these patients had hoped they would receive relief from pain caused by a variety of health issues like carpal tunnel, elbow and arm pain. The results are remarkable.

It turns out that the terrible symptoms experienced, due to the pills they were taking, were exactly what the patients were warned about prior to treatment. Naturally, you may think that’s normal – but here’s where the results may surprise you.

Some patients were given acupuncture instead of typical pain medication and they reported feeling much better with the acupuncture therapy. Again, you might expect these results – but here’s the catch.

The acupuncture patients never really received the treatment – it was a sham. So, I ask you to think, what produced the healing response?

Now don’t get me wrong – no one is suggesting that you can simply think away a cancer tumor or any other serious health condition – but the power of the mind should never be underestimated in terms of reversing dis-ease. And, just to make myself perfectly clear, always remember the concept of the ‘nocebo effect’ – whereby a negative belief can generate a negative physical outcome.

Do you remember the words of Henry Ford?

”Whether you think that you can, or that you can’t, you are usually right.”

Bottom line, our belief system has much to do with our ability to prevent, even reverse disease. Take the time to educate yourself, nourish yourself and, most importantly, believe in yourself and your ability to overcome any obstacle.

  • Many people will have a difficult time reconciling the power of the mind to heal, the placebo effect as an effective contribution toward pain relief and wellness, compared to medical drugs which supposedly have scientific trials backing up their efficacy. Can these approaches work together: taking a material pill, getting a hands-on treatment, having a healthcare provider give words of healing, and changing your mindset?
