Artificial colors linked to cancer

Artificial Ingredient Warning(NaturalHealth365) Since the 1970’s, medical experts like Dr. Ben Feingold, allergist and pediatrician, warned about the dangers of artificial colors in our food supply. Every year, over 15 million pounds of these toxic additives are dumped into the food supply – increasing the risk for allergies, hyperactivity and, even cancer.

Government ‘health’ agencies don’t really care about public health

At this point, it’s safe to say that top Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) officials care more about protecting corporate profits versus human health concerns. Artificial colors are chemically-derived from a crude oil used in gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt and tar. It’s a cheap way of making unhealthy, processed foods look more appealing. Yet, the FDA would have us believe that ‘strict safety standards’ are used in producing these ingredients and it’s o.k. to eat this crap.

Time and again, we see a similar pattern to how government health agencies operate. If concerned physicians or scientists question the value of any approved chemical – they are either ignored or threatened. This is how health agencies, originally designed to protect public health, treat conscious objection and support the profits of chemical companies without any degree of moral accountability.

A serious health alert to every concerned parent

The Center of Science in the Public Interest published a comprehensive report called Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks – which highlights the inherent risks of nine different dyes widely used in foods. In testing artificial colors – Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 – they discovered that lab animals experienced cancer tumors and other serious health problems.

In truth, Yellow 5 caused mutations in over half of the tests. Even the FDA tests showed that the three most widely used dyes; Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 are tainted with cancer causing compounds such as benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl. When are we going to put an end to this food madness.

There seems to be no regard for human life

In the 1990’s, the FDA and Health Canada found a hundred times as much benzidine, in a bound form, that is released in the colon, but not detected in the routine tests of purity conducted by the FDA.

The research team from the Slovak University of Technology, looking at two blue dyes – Patent Blue and Brilliant Blue – found Brilliant Blue, known as FD&C Blue No.1 actually causes cancer. This dye is used in food, textiles, leathers, and cosmetics throughout the United States. Of course, many FDA scientists know about the problem but are too afraid to speak up for fear of losing their jobs.

Watch out for those blue lollipops! “Brilliant Blue is one of the most commonly used blue dyes,” says Jarmila Hojerova an associate Professor at the University, president of the Slovak Society of Cosmetology and co-author of the study. Up to this study, experts thought this color was ‘safe’, but these researchers have been able to show that the dyes can enter the body via the skin or through the digestive tract.

This was a surprising discovery, since it was believed that the skin blocked the dye from seeping into the body, and that the dyes were destroyed by the gastrointestinal tract. Well, guess again, these dyes are highly toxic.

The blue dyes were placed on the tongue for 20 minutes, in an effort to mimic licking a lollipop. A day later, it was found that the dyes had actually been absorbed through the tongue into the body.

In 2003, Brilliant Blue was used as a dye in the feeding tube solution of uninformed hospital patients. Can you believe it? Ultimately, the side effects included blue-tinged skin, urine and feces; metabolic acidosis and even death.

Is food coloring the ‘American Way’?

Let’s face it – every time unsuspecting food consumers eat unnatural, chemically-polluted food – they are clogging up the circulatory system and depriving the cells of much needed oxygen. When cell consume less oxygen they produce less ATP, the key to cellular energy. Gradually, over time, as the body gets congested with more and more toxins – the risk of cancer goes way up.

In Britain, the popular orange soda Fanta is dyed with pumpkin and carrot extract – while the U.S. orange soda is colored with Red 40 and Yellow 6. Kellogg Strawberry NutriGrain bars are colored with Red 40, Yellow 6 and Blue 1 in the U.S. – yet, in the UK, it is colored with beetroot, annatto and paprika extract. Americans are literally being poisoned to death.

Europe rejects GMOs and food colors

McDonald’s Strawberry Sundaes are colored with strawberries, in Britain, and in the U.S. with Red 40. In Europe, Kraft Foods uses natural coloring for its macaroni and cheese but in the U.S. – they pour on the toxic chemicals.

Why can’t U.S. citizens demand a ban on all food dyes? Overseas, many food dyes are banned, and the law requires the ones used to be displayed on the packaging. As consumers, we have a right to know.

In America, just about all processed foods have artificial colors and flavorings. Products such as Minute Maid Lemonade, Lunchables, Fruit Roll Ups, Cheetos, Light and Fit Yoplait Yogurt and neon sodas are contaminated with food coloring.

Restaurant foods such as lemon and chocolate pies, ice cream, ice cream toppings, sauces and condiments contain food dyes. And, in the U.S., government health agencies simply allow the chemical companies to do all the ‘safety’ testing. What a sick joke – isn’t it?

Like I’ve said before – it’s time to get back to freshly-prepared, home cooked meals. Federally-run, school lunch programs and big corporations will not supply healthy food. Vote with your dollars and avoid these commercially-produced foods – as much as possible. This is the only way to teach soulless corporations a lesson in food ethics and morality.

I did make the change a since 2010. After looking at labels religiously, I tried not buying anything containing GMO foods like soy, corn, canola etc. It was very difficult to find processed foods without one or more of these ingredients.
Finally it made sense to stop buying as much processed foods as possible.
What a difference to my health!
I do not trust any food manufacturer in NA and bought myself a food processor recently to make nut butters etc.

Really sad, and right now people are putting dyes in the frosting of Christmas cookies. I’ve also been trying for years to tell people to NOT put red dye in Hummingbirds food. They do not need this, and it’s hard on their little kidneys. I would never buy the prepackaged food for them, it’s full of dye and preservatives. The tried and true recipe of 1/4 cup sugar and 1 cup of water is best for them. Pet food is another sore subject, dogs and cats DO NOT care it it has color. Why are we treated so bad and people in Europe get the “good” stuff? Could it be because so many seem to not care or speak up?
