(NaturalHealth365) Lentils bring to mind a hot bowl of soup loaded with healthy vegetables. Yet, few think of lentils as a nutritional fountain of youth, loaded with fiber, folate, iron, protein, vitamins and minerals. Researchers who looked at the elderly found these and other legumes were the single most important factor in longevity.
Lentils are small seeds that grow in pods. They are a member of the legume family and are related to beans, chickpeas, soy and peanuts. They are thought to have originated in the Near East and are one of the oldest cultivated plants with nearly a dozen varieties of lentils that vary in color and size. The best known are green, brown, yellow and red – with red being the smallest in size.
A boost of energy to last a lifetime
Lentils contain more folate than any other plant food. This means it offers protection against coronary artery disease by lowering homocysteine levels. In addition, there is a decreased risk of breast cancer due to the large amounts of vitamin B6 and folate. By replenishing iron stores it increases energy which keeps levels constant throughout the day. A healthy iron level helps the body to transport oxygen from the lungs to the cells producing needed energy.

Healthy eating made simple and easy
Compared to most other dried beans, lentils are quick and easy to prepare. They cook up quick and go with virtually all vegetables. With a full serving of soup you can add cruciferous vegetables and sea vegetables, like Kombu.
Lentil cooking time is about 30 minutes and need no presoaking; red lentils cook the fastest and may be ready to eat in 20 minutes while the black, brown, or green varieties have more fiber and take a little longer.
Nutritional abundance in every bit
The 15.6 g of fiber in 1 cup of red lentils provides 62 percent of the 25 g daily recommended amount. There are 230 calories in 1 cup of red lentils, and an extraordinary high level of nutrients. It has 17.9 g of protein in 1 cup, and a low glycemic index. Red and yellow lentils are green lentils with their skins (hulls) removed – which means the fiber content isn’t as high.
Moroccan dishes use lentils with vegetables, soy sauce, cumin, and cayenne. Where as India uses a spiced lentil dish known as dal. In America, lentil soup is typically created with carrots, garlic, celery, peppers, greens, thyme, parsley and basil.
Naturally, fresh beans are best but if you buy canned beans – avoid can liners made from bisphenol-A and extra additives. Of all the beans, lentils offer an easy – low cost – way to ensure our family’s health. Try it, (maybe) you’ll like it.

American Cancer Society has a new message

(NaturalHealth365) The new guidelines issued by the American Cancer Society will both urge cancer survivors to eat right and exercise to prevent the disease from coming back, and doctors will be encouraged to talk to their patients about eating right, exercising and slimming down if they’re too heavy.
Is it too little – too late
This is the same organization that calls for mammograms and other cancer screenings, while promoting the standard treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. They claim to have encouraged healthy habits, but until now, the group didn’t think there was much evidence to support a strong statement.
Experts are not unanimous about the protective effects of diet on cancer; many have said that diet has no effect on this condition. (crazy, but true) The studies that have concluded diet wasn’t effective used a healthy diet consisting of one or two more fruits and vegetables with a little less fat then the standard American diet.
Nutritional “experts” need to get re-educated
The vast majority of past studies have focused on isolated vitamins not the synergistic actions of a nutrient dense diet. It turns out the advice you got as a child to “eat your greens” has a bigger effect on estrogen metabolism and cell division then any single vitamin.
This new upgrade in recommendations took in to account more than 100 studies in the last 5 years involving cancer survivors, which showed that exercise and/or a healthy diet was associated with lower cancer recurrence rates and longer survival.
Being overweight or obese has long been tied to an increase risk of cancers of the colon, esophagus, kidney, pancreas and breast cancer in post menopausal women. However, there hadn’t been much evidence on the effects of diet and exercise on people who had cancer until now.
Always keep the “big picture” in mind
These new guidelines are not pioneering or promising, because the effects of the standard medical protocol compromises the immune system and can cause secondary cancers. The most dangerous effects of chemotherapy and radiation aren’t neutralized by a few more vegetables.
This is what Mark W. Dewhirst, D.V.M., professor of radiation oncology at Duke University had to say; “In a sense, these therapies can make a tumor healthier.” He went on to explain by, “unless the treatment is very effective in killing many if not most tumor cells, you are shooting yourself in the foot.”
The tumor cells that survive the therapies drive and increase a regulatory factor called HIF1 (hypoxia-inducible factor 1), which cells use to get the oxygen they need by increasing blood vessel growth into the tumor. Solid tumors generally have low oxygen, and HIF1 helps them get the oxygen they need.
The other challenges occurs because cancer cells can survive in a harsh environment, high chemical exposure, low oxygen, higher availability of glucose, acidic pH, which means drugs used in chemotherapy will kill the weaker, and more benign (healthier) cells, while creating the very conditions known to make the more malignant and chemo resistant cancer cells thrive. In the same manner, radiotherapy is known to induce secondary cancers.
So when the American Cancer Society hands out material encouraging cancer survivors to eat better, they should mention what they need to do to minimize the harm done by the treatments they endorse. Don’t be fooled – educate yourself as fast as possible.

The untold Vitamin E – Cancer connection

(NaturalHealth365) The debate over whether vitamin E prevents or promotes cancer has been fabricated by the conventional cancer (business) industry. The truth about the power of vitamin E has yet to be told. If you look carefully – the “scientific” community which promotes doubt (and fear) over natural nutrients is funded by big pharma. (does that surprise anyone?)
The question of whether vitamin E promotes cancer has its roots in some poorly understood facts. For the record, foods that are vitamin rich such as, mustard greens, turnip greens, spinach, collard greens, kale, sunflower seeds and almonds do NOT cause cancer. Remember, whole food nutrition isn’t a fractionated thing – made in a laboratory.
Conventional science wants you uneducated and fearful
The “race for the cure” has deceived cancer patients for too long. We’ve seen – time and again – many dubious studies about cancer treatment and prevention. Yet, real research reveals that individuals who consume lots of fruits and vegetables have much lower rates of all diseases – including cancer.
Here’s something you may NOT have heard in the lame-stream media. The Vitamin E “controversy” is over! The Center for Cancer Prevention Research, at Rutgers Ernest Mario Scholl of Pharmacy, and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey believe that two forms of vitamin E-gamma and delta-tocopherols are effective in preventing colon, lung, breast and prostate cancers.
Shedding light on the power of Vitamin E
The examination of animal studies done at Rutgers – as well as human epidemiological studies – have found a healthy connection between vitamin E and cancer. The animal studies found that tocopherols slowed down the development of tumors, and that the delta-tocopherol form of Vitamin E suppressed colon cancer more than any other type of vitamin E.
Other studies showed eating foods rich in vitamin E such as greens, peppers, and olive oil lowers the risk for bladder cancer by 50% – according to research that has been presented at an annual meeting of the American Association of Cancer Research. Increasing vitamin E intake to the amount consumed to cut the risk of bladder cancer by 50% would mean a single serving daily of spinach or a handful of nuts.
You can kill cancer cells – naturally
Naturally occurring vitamin E exists in eight chemical forms and all have varying levels of biological activity. Research teams investigating the anti-carcinogenic potential of various forms of vitamin E found that gamma-tocopherol in combination with other forms of vitamin E such as delta-tocopherol induced apoptosis (cell suicide) in certain forms of prostate cancer within 3 days of treatment. You think big pharma wants you to know about this?
The advice coming from the researchers such as Dr. Yang who headed up the Rutgers study stated: “For people who think they need to take vitamin E supplements, taking a mixture of vitamin E that resembles what is in our diet would be the most prudent supplement to take.”
More good news: A high intake of vitamin E from food, but not from supplements is known to lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Rush university’s Martha Morris, lead nutritional researcher for the Chicago Health and Aging Project, found a 67% lower risk of Alzheimer’s in subjects with the highest intake of vitamin E from food.
She went on to say: “various tocopherol forms rather than alpha-tocopherol alone may be important in the vitamin E protective association with Alzheimer’s disease. Supplements of vitamin E usually provide only alpha-tocopherol.
It’s time to re-program our minds

What creates aggressive breast cancer growth
Researchers at Dominican University of California have shown that breast cancer cells become increasingly aggressive the longer they are exposed to small concentrations of cadmium, a heavy metal commonly found in cosmetics, food, water, and air particles. The normal growth of mammary gland epithelial cells is modulated by the circulating levels of estrogen, a hormone produced by the ovaries. The activity of estrogen is simulated by the estrogen receptor. Heavy metals, such as cadmium, can act as “endocrine disruptors” and go on to disturb your normal hormonal balance.
The research indicates that chronic exposure to cadmium contributes to the development of more malignant characteristics within breast cancer cells. Unfortunately, we are exposed to cadmium on a daily basis, coming from the food, air and water PLUS most commercially-produced cosmetic products.

Routine dental exams could increase your risk of cancer
The newest and largest study of its kind found that a history of frequent dental X rays, particularly at a young age, is tied to an increased risk of developing meningioma, the most common type of primary brain tumor in the United States. In fact, dental x-rays are among the most common sources of radiation for most people in the U.S.
Exposure to ionized radiation – the type found in x-rays is the largest known risk factor for developing the largely non-malignant meningioma brain tumors. The new study shows that performing frequent dental x-rays presents an unnecessary risk to those that are exposed to them. Keep in mind, if your dentist makes you feel “uncomfortable” about your health concerns (or questions) – get another dentist!
Non-malignant tumors should NOT be taken lightly
While the vast majority of meningiomas are non-malignant, they can grow to be very large and cause a host of problems which include hearing and vision loss, frequent headaches, memory loss, and seizures. This is the most frequently diagnosed brain tumor among adults in the United States and accounts for a third of all primary brain and central nervous system tumors.
In a newly published study, from the American Cancer Society’s journal – Cancer, (the largest of its kind) it was reported that people having “bitewing” x-rays at least yearly were found to have a 40% to 90% greater risk of meningioma. The bitewing x-rays are the one used to check for decay between the teeth and any periodontal disease. The meningioma patients in the study were more then twice as likely to have dental x-rays at some point in their lives as the adults without these tumors.
X-Rays are a recipe for disaster
The American Dental Association (ADA) responded to the study in a written statement, noting the ADA has long called on its members to order dental x-rays only when necessary. To minimize radiation exposure, the groups recommends using protective aprons and collars and use of the fastest film speeds available or a digital x-ray. Does your dentist follow these guidelines? Medical (business) truths about the cancer industry
Did you know the average conventional cancer treatment costs over $300,000? Yet, most natural cancer remedies costs a few thousand dollars or less. So if cancer patients could effectively be treated for so much less money – why hasn’t it been done?

Thanks to a few honest oncologists – actual studies were preformed to determine whether the bone marrow transplants actually helped women with breast cancer. Eventually, with great resistance, five studies were completed – four showed the therapy was no more effective than standard chemotherapy against breast cancer and one study (“very positive”) was ultimately proven to be completely fraudulent!
Even Dr. Gonzalez has witnessed the underhanded tactics of cancer agencies, like the National Cancer Institute which undermined his successful methods of treating pancreatic cancer without radiation or chemotherapy. But, his story, would need to be told another day.

How to extend your life with Vitamin D

(NaturalHealth365) In the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, W.B. Grant of the Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center in San Francisco concluded that doubling one’s serum level of vitamin D may increase life expectancy by an average of two years.
Research shows that current vitamin D recommendations may be inadequate. Using epidemiological studies, Dr. Grant calculated that increasing serum vitamin D could lower the mortality rate of diseases, which are sensitive to vitamin D by approximately 20%. Positive outcomes were seen by increasing serum vitamin D levels from 22 to 44 ng/mL, however levels higher than 50 ng/mL are where the real promise of longevity can occur.
Obese Americans don’t understand the danger
Getting full spectrum sunlight isn’t a guarantee of adequate vitamin D levels. There is a way Americans may be wiping out their level of vitamin D, and shortening their life expectancy. Vitamin D is stored in fat, when you increase fat you are retaining more vitamin D. To liberate vitamin D and raise the levels you have to burn fat.
Physical activity stimulates fat burning and will liberate vitamin D from your fat stores. Routine physical activity, which works up a sweat, has been shown to significantly raise vitamin D levels. When your “body mass index” (BMI) goes up, the level of activity falls along with the vitamin D level.
Winter can have grave consequences to your health
Nature intended for us to burn most of our fat stores over the winter months – due to less food being available. But, since there is such an abundance of food availability all year round, this biologically-natural process isn’t being utilized within modern living condition.
This is one (major) reason why the “battle of the bulge” can be considered a threat to our national security. Our western lifestyles have us eating more food in the cold months, and through the holidays. (not good) So rather than liberating stored vitamin D for our body to use – we store more by gaining weight when it is time to trim down.
People who are obese and have a body mass index greater than 30 or who have had gastric bypass surgery usually have lower vitamin D serum levels than non-obese individuals. Obesity doesn’t affect the skin’s capacity to synthesize vitamin D, but greater amounts of subcutaneous fat holds the vitamin D hostage. The problem with gastric bypass surgery is that it diverts food from the upper part of the small intestine – where vitamin D is absorbed – along with other nutrients.
There is some new research, which shows that a vitamin D deficiency can interfere with the hormone leptin, which is the hormone that lets you know when you are full. This may be why modern man eats more and gains weight in the winter.
Since vitamin D deficiency is increasingly associated with many common cancers, osteoporosis, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, and infectious diseases, it would seem prudent to find effective ways to liberate our stored vitamin D during the colder months.
