The health benefits of Spirulina are simply amazing

Print Friendly

Breast Cancer Prevention(NaturalHealth365) The benefits of spirulina are so numerous it (almost) hard to believe, including radiation protection and cancer prevention. The “original” superfood, spirulina is a mix of raw ingredients, which come together to specifically address all the elements of life. In fact, humans could thrive on just eating spirulina and drinking pure spring water.

Discover the ultimate superfood for optimal health

Spirulina is considered one of the most nutritious and concentrated food sources on the planet. Its protein content is an amazing 60 percent – where meat comes in at 27 percent protein. Spirulina is a biologically complete source of protein which contains all the essential amino acids needed to live.

The proteins in spirulina are highly digestible, due to the fact it doesn’t have cellulose walls, like yeast and chlorella. Spirulina has the same calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium as milk, a vitamin level equal to wheat germ and four times as much vitamin B12 as raw liver.

Mineral rich food is the key to a long and happy life

Spirulina is rich in vitamin K, iodine, magnesium, selenium, manganese, potassium, and zinc, while being the best known sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, a very important fatty acid for the heart). The other essential fatty acid includes sulfolipids, which is thought to be protective against HIV infection of T-cell helpers.

Of course, spirulina is known for its phytopigments such as phycocyanin, chlorophyll and carotenoids (the precursor to vitamin A). In addition, if you’re under lots of stress, spirulina is rich in vitamin B1, B2, B6, E, and K.

With such a lineup of nutrients you would thing there is just about nothing it can’t do and you would be right.

Support healthy brain function with essential amino acids

The presence of essential amino acids, in this magnificent algae, has been found to balance brain chemistry by providing the necessary elements for healthy neurotransmitter functioning.

It is an amazing alkalizing food and contains about 2,000 enzymes which help break food down into digestible parts. Did you know that Spirulina has the second highest concentration, behind mother’s milk, of omega 6 fatty acid?

Spirulina contains many other life-supportive nutrients such as, iron, copper, and chromium – which is helpful for those suffering from anemia, chronic fatigue or blood sugar issues.

Boost your immunity by improving your digestive system

Spirulina promotes a healthy digestive system by suppressing the growth of bad bacteria such as, E. coli and candida yeast, while stimulating beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria.

In 1994, a Russian patent was awarded to spirulina as a medical food to reduce allergic reactions from radiation sickness. Based on testing in 1990, the Belarus Ministry of Health concluded spirulina promotes the evacuation of radiation from the human body, without side effects.

Superfood nutrition reduces the threat of radiation toxicity

Spirulina offers protection from ionizing radiation and medical diagnostic procedures, which are currently the greatest man-made source of exposure to the general population. Simply put, if you’re looking for a cancer prevention strategy – eat spirulina.

The source of your food is everything

Not all Spirulina is the same – so it is important to know the source and the manufacturing procedures before you buy it. Organic spirulina has many advantages, in that it is grown without any synthetic compounds. Some of the best areas of the world to buy quality spirulina are Hawaii and India. By the way, you can request the “Certificate of Analysis” from a good company, because there are heavy metals and bacteria levels that need to be measured by law, all producers have it, but may not want to offer that information.

The things you want are non-detectable levels of heavy metals, yeast and mold. Since spirulina is one of the top superfoods – it is worth the effort to find responsible sourcing and become a discerning buyer.

Spirulina was created with care and inspired by life to protect us from the modern influences on our food supply and heath care industry. Try adding anywhere from a teaspoon to a tablespoon of organic spirulina to green smoothies and experience the health benefits for yourself. Let us know what you think – post your comments below.

“Some of the best areas of the world to buy quality spirulina are Hawaii and India.” So… how does this info help me to buy spirulina in Canada? I need more infromation please.

Is there really any science to spirulina claims?? Too often in the alternative health community any slightest hint of something that confirms their worldview is taken as gospel w/o question. Example, green coffee bean extract now touted all over as a weight loss miracle. Upon looking into it, I found the hoopla is based upon one short term study involving 16 people.
Re spirulina I paste a comment from Andrew Weil the alternative health doctor – anybody got links to more extensive studies? See Dr Weil below:
Chlorella is a microscopic, green freshwater organism (an alga) that is aggressively promoted on the internet for its supposed health benefits. You may have read that it boosts energy, absorbs pesticides from the foods in your diet, fights cancer, eliminates infections, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels, cleanses the blood and the digestive system, regulates blood sugar and benefits health in many other ways. This sounds impressive, but there is very little scientific evidence to back up these extravagant claims.

After World War II, chlorella was investigated as a possible commercial food source, and some research suggested that it prevented liver disease in mice, might reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, and might slow the growth of some cancer cells. According to the American Cancer Society, early lab and animal research suggested that extracts of chlorella might have anticancer properties, but we have no evidence that they can effectively prevent or treat cancer in humans. Results of a 2003 study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal showed that chlorella failed to boost immune response to flu shots.

Chlorella will probably not hurt you (unless you’re allergic to it), but we have no studies on the effects of long-term use. More importantly, we have no strong evidence to show that it will do you any good. Side effects can include diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, green discoloration of the stools and stomach cramping. Taking chlorella supplements can also lead to sun sensitivity.

For the record, I don’t approve of taking blue-green algae (Aphanizomenon), which is different from chlorella. Some species of blue-green algae produce toxins, including neurotoxins that can increase long-term risks of degenerative diseases of the central nervous system. Note, however, that spirulina, a common variety of blue-green algae, does not produce these neurotoxins and was given a favorable safety rating after an extensive review by the United States Pharmacopeia Dietary Supplements Information Expert Committee in 2010.

Spirulina and chlorella are often promoted together as green “superfoods,” but the science that addresses their nutritional benefits is scant at best. Some laboratory and animal studies have indicated that spirulina has antiviral and anticancer effects, boosts the immune system and protects against allergic reactions, but there’s no proof of any such positive health effects in humans. Spirulina has been used in World Health Organization (WHO) feeding programs for malnourished children in underdeveloped countries, and the WHO has found that a daily, one-gram dose of spirulina provides enough beta-carotene to reduce the incidence of Bitot’s spots (a type of blindness caused by vitamin A deficiency). Spirulina is also a good source of protein, although Western diets already contain more than adequate amounts.

I also thought spirulina was the best food you could ever take until I had a bloodtest and my B12 was very low. I had been taking 6 of the Indian spirulina a day for 6 months. I became more and more exhausted which prompted me to check my bloods. 9 months before my B12 was in the middle range of normal. I have been a vegetarian for 40 years and have never had low B12. I subsequently discovered that spirulina blocks the body’s ability to absorb B12. Please look into this before recommending it as the ultimate superfood.

I love Spirulina when I was anemic 3 tsp. a day brought my iron levels back to normal. And my b12 levels were great

  • Sir Gary Samer

I have been a natural health practitioner for over 32 years and have helped approx 30,000 people reclaim their health, many of whom were terminally ill. I use and recommend Sun Chlorella with no reservations. To date, there have been approx 5,000 scientific studies done on chlorella! I can’t understand Dr Weil not being able to read many of these online. The majority of the research has been done in China, Taiwan, and Japan but there are hundreds of studies from western research. I won’t go into the numerous mistakes in Dr Weil’s segment. Drs David Steenblock Randall Merchant, Bernard Jensen, Michael Rosenbaum, Mark Drucker, David Freeman, David Nelson, Susan Smith Jones, Joyce Johnson and many more have seen phenominal changes as a result of patients taking it, as have I. We all only recommend the Sun brand because of its patented technology. Dr Max Gerson, who was called the greatest medical genius of all time once said: “There are thousands of papers, comments and studies published but the ONLY thing that matters is what happens at the patient’s bedside. Based on my personal experiences, Sun Chlorella is my number 1 all-time favourite whole food and I truly believe it is THE best superfood on the planet. I believe that spirulina, wheat grass, barley grass etc are also excellent IF PROPERLY SOURCED. Health, peace and happiness to all from Down Under!

Interesting what one reader wrote about b12. I found a link here to support what he says. Over enough time it could reduce b12 to low levels. curezone.com/forums/am.asp?i=1398048

So,how about some links or references to some of these 5000 studies on Chlorella. Studies on humans rather than rats, that is. I believe that is Dr Weil’s major point – a shortage of human studies.
As for people having miraculous results from Chlorella therapy, well, that is interesting and worthy of note but all kinds of therapies have been proclaimed for their results (think leaches/bleeding etc) but it turns out to be either placebo effect or simply that the person recovered on their own and the cure was attributed to whatever they were taking at the time. This applies to pharma products as well as alternatives – BTW.
I have no basis for choosing between one expert who says completely the opposite of what another says. I do know that many years ago I tried super blue green algae when it was the miracle food du jour and read all about how you should start out gradually increasing the dosage because it was so good at detoxing etc that it might provoke a healing crisis and make you feel bad. Being a skeptical type I deliberately started out taking megadoses from day one. Although I was hardly living a low toxin lifestyle,I noticed no side effects aside from rapid anemia in my wallet as I was buying this highly priced pond scum. I also noticed that the rather large label had very tiny tiny print when listing the impressively long list of nutrients. I finally had to get a magnifying glass to read this and discovered that, aside from B12, all the many nutrients listed were present only in trace amounts like half a percent of the RDA of that era. Clearly the maker wanted an unreadable but impressively long list of nutrients as a sell point in hopes no one would go to the trouble of actually fact checking on their own label. Yes, I know there are many nutrients for which there are no RDAs and which may not even have been known of, then or now. Nevertheless, something does not quite click when, even today,25+ years later, a substance is proclaimed the ultimate superfood yet it has virtually no measurable amounts of all but one of the so-far recognized essential vitamins & minerals. I do not know about studies from Asia but I do detect a possible whiff of either fraud or cognitive dissonance.
Ultimately, I really want to believe in alternative therapies as I detest modern medicine but alternatives have always been found wanting. Headache remedies that do not relieve headaches, sleep remedies that don’t make me sleepy, the list goes on and on over many years of trying and only one or two things that actually seemed to have any effect at all. And after all these failures with alternative remedies for common complaints, I then I see people like Mike Adams basically saying that all people with cancer who use chemo and radiation die of cancer and/or side effects while those that use alternative remedies almost always get better and live on full lives. Posh Tosh to both assertions!
Sorry for the rant but I just get tired of what seems to be baseless praise & promotion for tiems with very little hard facts. I refer again to the green coffee bean craze which springs from one short term study with 16 subjects. This is not science, just boosterism and faddishness. Nuff said! Show me the studies…
