(NaturalHealth365) Coconut oil reverses Alzheimer’s should be big news, where are the headlines stating the possibilities of this cost effective treatment. This should be a priority since it optimizes health and makes a difference in cognitive function. The safety of raw organic coconut oil isn’t disputed.
The cost of treating Alzheimer’s is estimated at over $148 billion and rising. At this time, it is thought to be a growing epidemic with at least 5 to 6 million people in the U.S. with this condition. It is the seventh leading cause of disability among both the elderly and middle aged.
Drug companies aren’t interested in anything that can’t make them a profit, but this may be the solution we need.
A medical doctor finds the answer to Alzheimer’s
Mary Newport, MD, is a medical director of the neonatal intensive care unit at Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Florida since it opened in 2003. About the same time the unit opened, her husband Steve, then 53, begun showing signs of progressive dementia, later diagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease. She reported that: “many days, often for several days in a row, he was in a fog; couldn’t find a spoon or remember how to get water out of the refrigerator.”
They started the usual drugs for his condition such as: Aricept, Namenda, Exelon, but his disease keep progressing. When Dr. Newport wasn’t able to get her husband into a drug trial for a newer Alzheimer’s medication, she started researching the mechanism behind Alzheimer’s.
She discovered that with Alzheimer’s disease certain brain cells have difficulty utilizing glucose from the carbohydrates we eat which is the brain’s principal source of energy. Without fuel, neurons (in the brain) can die. What she found is an alternative energy source for brain cells – special fats called ketones. There is a way to have the body produce ketones naturally by taking in practically no carbs – but that’s a difficult diet to maintain.
But, there is another safe and effective way to create ketones by consuming oils – which have medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). When these fats are digested, the liver converts it into ketones.
Nature provides the answer
Dr. Newport learned that the ingredient in the drug trial which was showing so much promise was simply MCT oil derived from coconut oil or palm kernel oil, and a dose of 20 grams (about 20 ml or 4 teaspoons) was used to produce these results.
When MCT is metabolized, the ketones that the body creates according to the latest research, not only protect against Alzheimer’s, but may actually reverse it.
The results are outstanding
Mr. Newport started taking the coconut oil twice a day. He was at a point where he could barely remember how to draw a clock. Two weeks after adding the coconut oil to his diet, his drawing improved. After 37 days, the drawings became even more accurate, and in the first 60 days Dr. Newport saw remarkable changes in Steve.
Steve would get up every day alert and happy, talkative, making jokes and the fog was eliminated. He was able to concentrate on things, which he wanted to do, such as, daily chores around the house and yard work – all by himself.
Over the next year, the dementia continued to reverse itself: he is able to run again, his reading comprehension has improved dramatically, and his short-term memory is improving. In fact, Steve often brings up events that happened days to weeks earlier and relays telephone conversations with accurate detail. Best of all, a recent MRI shows that the brain atrophy has been completely halted!
Shocking news! The ketones from natural coconut oil remain longer in the body than the drug version. When will conventional medicine recognize the power of whole, natural foods to promote healing?

I love this info, and it came just on time for me because my hubby has some form of dementia. He is seeing a neuro this coming week. Only one question remains on my mind. It says raw coconut oil, does anyone have a suggestion on where I can purchase reputable, real deal coconut oil from an honest company? There are just so many fake company’s out there selling questionable products!

I’m with Caren. You are all terrific! A big thank you to Dr. Newport as well. I’ve seen improvement on a friend as well. The trick is to get it in her body in a way she thinks tastes good.

A scintillatingly brilliant discovery1 For long, coconut oil was being demonized and now it is being fully vindicated. I use it in my experimental naturopathic
centre but believe it or not, in a land of coconuts, it is not easy to get coconut oil in Jamaica except at elevated prices. I will certainly look into going into production of it. Do keep up the good work with you information flow. ON A FINAL NOTE: WOULD YOU SEE ALZHEIMERS AS A TYPE OF DIABETES?

I learned about the health benefits of coconut oil a few years back and it’s the only thing I use now for cooking. However I never got into the habit of eating it for some reason, and fortunately I don’t suffer any serious health problems. However I must say that this new information has given me new resolve to start incorporating more of the coconut oil into my daily regimen.
I’ve heard people suggest using it mixed with food if one has a problem eating it straight, so starting tomorrow I’m going to put some of it in my hot oatmeal and banana breakfast.
Interestingly, I’ve just started using some of the oil though on my scalp. I have a thyroid problem and consequently have a problem with hair falling out. So a few days ago I decided to try massaging coconut oil into my scalp and leaving it on for a few hours before shampooing my hair. It’s too early to tell yet but I’m going to give it time and hope it works to strengthen and restore my hair back to health.
For Madeline who wants a good source of coconut oil you can find it here:

My husband and I have been using coconut oil for about four years. I was amazed the first three months I had a huge drop in cholesterol, although that wasn’t why I was taking it. We use it for baked potatoes, lt. saute of vegetables, on toast, in any kind of baking, in smoothies and you are only limited by your imagination. I have been extremely happy with the oil produced by Nutiva. In 2001 I was diagnosed with mercury poisoning and severe memory problems. So I am particularly concerned about my memory. Living in a retirment community it is so sad that seniors think that it is dangerous to eat fats, but they don’t undertstand you need fat, but not all the sweets they think they thrive on.

Alzheimer’s has been called a form of diabetes. The real issue is the connection between them. Diabetes is tied to heart disease and cancer, and is a cause of diminshed brain function.
As sugar levels rise the risk of cognitive impairment increases. Nutrition is a factor in Alzheimer’s and data shows high sugar levels make it hard to maintain optimal levels of vitamins and minerals. This alone can cause cognitive problems. There is an association of vitamin B12, brain volume and cognitive function. Low levels are tied to low brain volume and poor cognitive function.
Diabetes causes artery disease, which means the flow of nutrients and oxygen to the brain will be impaired. Diabetes raises the risk of degeneraive disease, which includes Alzheimer’s.

My husband has epilepsy, and for years has not been able to prevent the seizures unless he stays on his “drugs”. He still has seizures that break through his drugs often. His thinking is normally foggy and slow, probably due to side effects from the drugs and brain damage from seizures. (Which he has had for more than 32 years) Through the years, we have tried every natural way can find to try to get him off the the drugs and not have seizures- without success. We recently came across the study about Dr. Newport treating her husband’s Alzheimer’s with Coconut oil and MCT. The report also stated that this can be useful for a number of brain related problems, and we knew that a ketone diet From Hopkin’s University has been successfully used for some epileptic children. ( We never did the Hopkins diet because it used so much pork fat, and we had reservations about that)
So he has been doing this Ketosis diet with coconut oil for a month now, and so far we have to drastially reduce his carbs to keep him in ketosis (aprox only 10 grams of carbs a day) no matter how much oil he consumes, but his thinking has been MUCH quicker and clearer than it has been for years. He still has to take his full doses of drugs ( Keppra and Trileptal), but upon seeing the drastic change in his clarity of mind, we are hopeful that he will gradually heal his brain to the point of getting away from the drugs.
We use the ketostix to check for ketones daily, keeping them high. He is eating only nuts, low carb veggies, eggs, butter, cod liver oil, cheeses, cream, flax seed muffins that I make, and every day LOTS of green veg juices that I make in my juicer. He eats no grain flour and no sugar whatsoever. He uses Stevia and xylitol for sweeteners. When his ketones get nearly maxed out to the top of the ketostix, he splurges with a small piece of fruit to prevent headaches that he seems to get from such high ketones . He is also taking chorella, red maca, spirulina, and a number of other supplements, minerals, and herbs that enhance brain function. We have found that
1 and 1/2 oz of coconut oil 3 times a day ( 8 hours apart) does the job without using the MCT oil. We then do 1 Tablespoon of Organic Butter and 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil 2 times a day. ( Needless to say, with all that oil whether he eats food or not, he never gets hungry anymore!)
We also are doing EFT tapping for healing and positive thinking.( google this- you’ll be amazed!)
We are anxious to see what the next few months bring!
Does anyone have any other info that may be helpful to us?

Also, I forgot to mention in my previous witeeup–Please note that this article did not tell the whole story! You must reduce the carbs to stay in fairly heavy ketosis plus take the oils. That’s what the original article that I read said. You have to experiment to see how many carbs you personally can eat and still be able to stay in ketosis.

Linda, is your husband’s diet totally gluten-free? I “fainted” last year in a supermarket (splitting my head open as I fell backwards and hit my head on a freezer), and was extensively tested at hospital but no cause could be found – all the results were excellent. I was told to go away and forget about it – ‘just one of those things that happens’!
I did a lot of investigation online as I wasn’t satisfied with this, and found some research by a professor at the University of Texas on seizures, with strong evidence to show that they were caused by gluten in the diet. There are also other universities doing research – one in Brazil for example.
Needless to say I have been completely gluten-free ever since (well over a year) and my health has improved immeasurably.
Hope this helps, Linda – your husband is very lucky to have such a caring partner.
