(NaturalHealth365) The health benefits of pomegranate juice are well documented as far back as 4,000 – 3,000 BC. In modern times, pomegranate juice has demonstrated an amazing ability to reverse existing atherosclerosis. Often called the “miracle fruit”, this amazing food can protect you from Alzheimer’s disease; many types of cancer; and cardiovascular disease.
Discover a natural way to reduce your risk for heart disease and strokes
A group of patients in Israel were given daily pomegranate juice supplements for one year and the follow up showed that atherosclerotic lesions in the carotid artery decreased by 35 percent in size while actually growing by 9 percent in the control group. In other words, the consumption of pomegranate dramatically improved blood flow to the brain reducing the risk of blood clots.
At the same time the total antioxidant activity increased by 130 percent in the pomegranate juice group and the blood pressure readings fell by 21 percent after a year on the juice. This occurred by drinking as little as 2 ounces daily.
California scientists show how to avoid crushing heart pain
A study, by the California Preventive Medicine Research Institute, was set up to compare the effects of pomegranate juice in patients with established coronary heart disease. The study was broken down into two groups; one group was administrated pomegranate juice and the other consumed a placebo beverage daily.
What was found at the end of three months was that drinking 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily produced a significant improvement in stress related ischemia. The placebo group experienced a worsening of the condition.
Ischemia is characterized by a decreased blood supply to the heart; which is caused by either a constriction or obstruction of the blood vessels.
Italian scientists reveal the power behind pomegranate juice
In experimental studies done at the University of Naples, Italy and the University of California and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers found that the polphenols (antioxidant chemicals) and other natural compounds contained in pomegranates retard plaque build up in the arteries.
These studies indicate that daily consumption of pomegranate juice, about 8 ounces a day for three months or more, can help limit the genetic tendency toward hardening of the arteries.
Whenever it’s been studied, unsweetened pomegranate juice has been more effective than any single component. It contains unique complex sugars, which are anti-infalmmatory on their own. Compounds found only in pomegranates called “punicalagins” are responsible for some of the fruits legendary power to reverse heart blockages and lower blood pressure.
Tips on eating pomegranate without the mess
Pomegranates are sometimes avoided because they can be messy and even stain clothes or countertops. But, this is a fruit worth mastering – since the seeds are sweet, juicy and bursting with flavor – they can be sprikled in vegetable and fruit salads and just eaten alone as a sweet treat.
Proper cutting technique: Just be sure to use a sharp knife, score the rind of the pomegranate in several places, but be sure not to cut all the way through. Cut the crown end of the pomegranate and discard. The crown can be recognized by a small crown-like top.
Then, soak the pomegranate in cold water, upside down for 5-10 minutes. Break apart the rind of the pomegranate and remove seeds from membrane by brushing them free – the seeds will sink to the bottom of the bowl.
Preparing a pomegranate is a learning experience, which pays off with life-saving, heart healthy benefits. If you have a favorite recipe – with this ancient fruit – share your ideas below.
