(NaturalHealth365) Compared to multi-million dollar drugs, natural bio-active substances appear to inhibit and kill cancer cells just as well. What we think of as the everyday apple may be a powerful and less lethal way of slowing down the development and progression of cancer cells.

Apples were considered a delicacy and regarded as an aphrodisiac by the Greeks. They were cultivated in the gardens of the wealthy. The apple has been the fruit of knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The apple has had a place in mans diet throughout history.

Apple Peel Power

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the apple appears to intervene in both the promotion and spread of cancer cells.

There are research reports that name over a dozen compounds called triterpenoids in the apple peel, which seem to either inhibit or kill cancer cells. Researchers from Cornell University, isolated 13 triterpenoids using bioactivity-guided testing of apple peels and then tested their antiproliferative powers. They tested them against liver, breast, and colon cancer cells. The study found that they offered protection against these three human cancers.

What the study reported was that rats who ate just one apple a day reduced their risk of breast cancer by upwards of 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent, and rats that were fed six apples a day reduced their risk by 44 percent. An extract from apple skins reduced the risk of colon cancer by 43 percent. Liver cancer risk was reduced by 57 percent, when an extract from the apple skins were fed to the lab rats.

Pectin

Apples are very high in pectin. Pectin is a soluble fiber, which is used for many health problems. Antioxidants in apple pectin will destroy free radicals, which have been implicated in both damaging cells and the spread of tumor cells.

Research has maintained that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. Pectin helps the digestive system function and this alone may make it a chemo preventive agent.

Quercetin

Researchers in Hawaii found an increased consumption of quercetin (from apples and onions) are associated with a reduced risk of lung cancer. Finland’s National Public Health Institute backed this up with the conclusion that a flavonoid-rich diet, especially from apples is associated with a reduced risk of developing cancer.

The Finland study of 9,959 cancer-free men and women revealed people who regularly consumed the most flavonoid-rich foods were about 20 percent lest likely to develop cancer. The researchers also found that lung cancer was 46 percent lower among those on this type of diet. There was a statistically significant inverse association between lung cancer risk and the flavonoid quercetin which which is found in onions and apples. The quercetin found in apples accounted for 95 percent of the flavonoids consumed by the study group.

Studies out of UCLA published in the International Journal of Cancer found the specific antioxidant (quercetin) found in apples slowed the growth and curbed the spread of pancreatic cancer in mice.

Apple Seeds

The cyanide in apple seeds has been shown in alternative health circles to limit the occurrence of cancerous growths. Apple seeds chemical derivative is known as vitamin B-17 or Laetrile. This therapy is not endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). There is much debate about B-17.

Apple seeds are thought of as a poison since they contain cyanide. When the seed is swallowed whole there is no danger. When it is chewed it releases the laetrile. Again, most people have consumed chewed apple seeds without any adverse affects. Eating the whole fruit is the way to get all the protective elements into your diet.

What is important about these kinds of studies, it can help people change the way they think about food. Evidence on the importance of dietary factors in curbing most chronic conditions is a reminder of what is required for a healthy life.
