How well does your liver work?

Dangerous toxins are lurking in personal care items and cleaning products including, laundry soap, dishwashing detergents, kitchen cleaners and baby products. Pesticides used in and around the house; the water coming into your home; volatile organic compounds from carpet and upholstery – all are among the products that are implicated in causing cellular damage. And, let’s not forget, processed foods we consume.

Environmental toxins are a major cause of cancer – they damage DNA and can activate cancer-causing genes, which would otherwise have remained dormant. You can do your best to avoid these, but it’s impossible to eliminate them completely.

What can we do to neutralize the threat of toxins?

Have you ever heard of apigenin? This is a bioflavonoid found in celery, parsley, chamomile, apples, oregano, tarragon, cilantro, basil, onions, oranges, endives and cloves. Recent studies have shown that certain types of flavonoids, mainly apigenin, epigallocatechin gallate, delphinidin and ellagic acid appear to be associated with a lower incident and risk of cancer.

Apigenin has been shown to be chemopreventive – by stopping the cells reproductive cycle; inducing cancer cell death by apoptosis (cell suicide); preventing metastasis; and slowing down new blood vessel formation.

Cat’s claw (uncaria tomentosa) extracts used in lab studies show they are effective against tumor cells from the breast, cervical, lung, thyroid, and colon cancer – while also working as well on leukemia.

Uncaria tomentosa extracts contain powerful antioxidants that protect and repair DNA from environmental damage. The protection is especially profound from cancer in organs with a rapid rate of cell turnover, such as skin, colon and lung – where a small amount of DNA damage can have a rapid accumulation of cancer initiating effects.

Rosemary offers remarkable protection against radiation. In addition, rosemary has been shown to be capable of enhancing the body’s ability to rid itself of potential carcinogens. It does this by shielding the cells of the blood and gastrointestinal tract from radiation’s ionizing and oxidizing effects.

Rosemary has been shown to stop DNA damage and tumor proliferation plus induces cancer cell suicide (apoptosis). In the practice of some integrative oncologists, they are looking at the combination of rosemary extracts plus vitamin D3 as a way to promote normal cell differentiation into mature, non-cancerous white blood cells. In other words, that are converting cells that are dividing abnormally back to their healthy state.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been used to treat cancer. Foods that contain EGCG are green tea, apples (especially fuji apples), blackberries, dark grapes and carob flour. Many other foods have trace amounts and these include strawberries, nuts, peaches, avocados, plums onions and raspberries.

According to Julius Geoepp, M.D., EGCG may work to prevent cancer at the cellular level and be useful for lessening the severity of breast, prostate, mouth, pancreases and colon cancer.

Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are a good source of several polyphenols such as, ellagic acid and delphinidin – both of which block angiogenesis. Researchers, in recent years, have shown that by blocking this process – it stops the formation of new blood vessels which would feed the tumors.

Did you know that consuming one cup of red raspberries per day (40mg of ellagtannins) has been shown to help prevent the development of cancer? Red raspberry ellagitannins protect human cells against cancer-causing agents in tobacco smoke, food additives, and petroleum-based substances.

Ellagitannins act as scavengers to “bind” cancer-causing chemicals, making them inactive, by blocking carcinogens from binding to the DNA.

Work at the Hollings Cancer Institude, led by Dr. Daniel Nixon, who had been studying the benefits of red raasberries for many years once said:

”What is interesting to note is the superior efficacy of eating red raspberries as opposed to taking the individual phytochemicals in the form of dietary supplements. Though we do not fully comprehend why this is so, it is clear the nutraceutical whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

To defeat cancer is a matter of preempting it by a diet of organic fruits, vergetables, herbs, and nutrient dense whole foods. You did point out that non-organic berries are soaked with cancer causing chemicals from pesticides that are sucked up into the cells of the plant therefore they are impossible to wash off.
