So why is Sulforaphane such a powerful anti-cancer agent?

First of all, it acts as a “signaling” molecule. Once inside the cell, Sulforaphane switches on over 200 specific genes that may be “asleep” due to toxicity, poor health and aging factors. Once these genes are turned back on, they produce special detoxification enzymes and antioxidant enzymes.

One of the antioxidants that it helps produce is Glutathione, which is a powerful and primary antioxidant that is produced inside the cell. Glutathione actually bathes the inside of the cell, protecting it against damaging free radicals.

Secondly, Sulforaphane has been found to cause cell death to cancer cells by inducing specific enzymes and proteins that cause the cancer cells to die. It also decreases the expression of estrogen receptors, which is so important for several types of breast cancers.

Broccoli is a member of the cabbage family. This is the family of vegetables responsible for slashing the risk of many age related conditions. Broccoli is closely related to the cauliflower. Its cultivation originated in Italy. Broccolo is its Italian name, which means sprout of the cabbage.

In ancient Rome, it was developed from a plant that looked like collards. Broccoli was brought to the United States during the colonial period and popularized by the Italian immigrants in the New World.

Health Benefits

Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable, which provides some astonishing health benefits. Broccoli has a whole group of health promoting properties. UK researchers found that eating broccoli could reverse the damage done to heart blood vessels by diabetes. The reason is that broccoli contains a compound called sulforaphane, which when tested in the lab was found to increased enzymes known to protect heart blood vessels and reduce the molecule that damage them. The study was done by Professor Paul Thornalley and colleagues at the University of Warwick, and is published online in the journal Diabetes.

People with diabetes have a five times greater risk of developing heart disease and stroke, primarily because of damage to heart blood vessels from having about three times the normal level of circulating oxidative molecules called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) caused by having high blood glucose (hyperglycemia).

Previous studies have shown that eating a diet high in vegetables especially the brassicas, with broccoli in particular is linked to a significant lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

This research was to test if sulforaphane would activate a protein known as nrf2, Our cells protect themselves against radicals and other reactive substances by a whole battery of enzymes and radical scavengers, called the Nrf2 system.

The aim of this study was to see if using sulforaphane would prevent metabolic dysfunction under conditions of hyperglycemia in the cells found in heart blood vessels. The results of the study showed a significant reduction of ROS molecules. Sulforaphane reversed the increase in ROS caused by hyperglycemia by 73 percent. Sulforaphane doubled the activation of nrf2, leading to increased production of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes in human microvascular cells.


Thornally said the study: “ Suggest that compounds such as sulforaphane from broccoli may help counter processes linked to the development of vascular diseases in diabetes,” He continues that he fully expected further studies to show eating a diet rich in brassicas would be highly beneficial to patients with diabetes.

The human studies are in: people who consume a diet high in fruits and vegetables are less likely to have diabetes or for that matter any chronic condition. There is evidence of remarkable reversal of diabetes for those who go on a plant based diet which includes broccoli.

This finding was according to the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Lab studies found one of the phytochemicals found in cruciferous vegetables (sulforaphane) can stimulate enzymes in the body which will detoxify carcinogens. Sulforaphane has the ability to increase the livers ability to detoxify cancer-causing compounds. Crucifers also are protective because of the high content of indole-3-carbino. Both of these compounds increase the excretion of a type of estrogen linked to breast cancer.
