Low vitamin D levels can alter your gene expression

Antibiotic News(NaturalHealth365) Low vitamin D levels can be the most damaging influence on our genetic health, according to professor George Ebers, Action Medical Research professor of Clinical Neurology and one of the senior authors of published scientific research.

What are the capabilities of vitamin D?

Researchers, at the University of Oxford, have shown the extent in which vitamin D interacts with our DNA. The researchers found 2,776 binding sites from the vitamin D receptor along the length of the genome. These are the ones unusually concentrated near a number of genes associated with autoimmune conditions such as MS, Crohn’s disease, systemic lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and cancers such as, lymphocytic leukemia and colorectal cancer.

Another small randomized, double-blind pilot study involving eight healthy men and women with an average age of 27 – who were vitamin D deficient at the start of the trial. Three participants received 400 International Units (IUs) of vitamin D per day and five received 2,000 units a day for a two month period.

Samples of immune cells were collected at the beginning and again at the end of the study. A broad gene expression analysis was conducted on these samples, and more than 22,500 genes were looked at to see if their activity increased or decreased as result of vitamin D intake.

The results of the gene expression analysis indicated statistically significant alterations in the activity of 291 genes. Further analysis showed that the biologic functions associated with the 291 genes are related to 160 biologic pathways linked to cancer, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cardio vascular function.

Michael F. Holick, PhD, MD, professor of medicine, physiology, and biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine and leading vitamin D expert – served as the study’s corresponding author, confirmed that the study revealed the molecular fingerprints that helps to explain the health benefits of this vitamin.

He went on to say that the study demonstrates improving vitamin D status can have a dramatic effect on gene expression in our immune cells.

Keep in mind, lots of scientific research suggests that getting enough vitamin D can help type-2 diabetics; improve eye health; reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and cancer plus much more.

The best ways to get vitamin D

Nothing is better than the sun at providing vitamin D in the right usable amount. The requirement for good sun exposure consists of getting outdoors anywhere from 11:00 to 2:00 p.m. – with as much skin exposed to the sun as possible.

This noon time sun is the best way to get the most direct sunlight exposure. You can get 10,000 IU of D3 by spending about 20 to 30 minutes in the sun at noon time. Most vitamin D experts agree – if you live at 30 degrees latitude or lower – you’ll get the most direct sun exposure for the least amount of time.

If you have extremely fair skin – you should start with less time. Age also can dictate the amount of sun you need – young people need less and older individuals need more exposure to the sun to make the same amount of vitamin D.

In addition, what we eat has a great influence on the effects of vitamin D metabolism.

How does magnesium influence vitamin D absorption?

This is a great example of a nutrient that is essential for optimal health including vitamin D absorption and effectiveness. Magnesium is needed for the mobilization of active vitamin D3 calcitriol – so it can prevent osteoporosis.

In Canada, the importance of vitamin D in the prevention of osteoporosis is recognized, which allows the health claim that foods containing calcium and vitamin D along with regular physical activity may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. As you probably guessed, this health claim is NOT allowed within the United States.

A diet high in magnesium can reduce your need for vitamin D3 supplementation and by eating leafy greens, nuts and perhaps some supplemental magnesium – you can meet your vitamin D requirements.

Good (food) sources of vitamin D include some varieties of fish such as, salmon, sardines, orange roughy, anchovies, kipper, herring, and other oily fishes, organic raw whole milk, farm fresh eggs, grass fed beef, mushrooms and high-quality cod liver oil.

Cut down on grains because excess grains in the diet decrease calcium absorption, which translates to an increased demand by the body for vitamin D.

What about vitamin D supplementation?

There are very good D3 supplements for those that can’t get enough sun and as long as you get your levels tested and stay on the recommended dosage – you should be fine. By the way, the correct vitamin D test is called: “25(OH)D”, or sometimes called, 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Most natural healthcare providers recommend that your vitamin D blood level be around 50-70 ng/ml or even as high as 100 ng/ml for cancer patients.

Very often, if you’re vitamin D deficient, you will need to supplement with about 5,000 – 10,000 IU per day. For children, it’s generally recommended to take 35 IU per pound of body weight. Vitamin B3 helps to destroy super bugs

New cancer treatments fail to save lives

(NaturalHealth365) Scientist are reporting what could be a giant set back in the race for a cancer cure. Customized cancer treatments based on each person’s genes was to be the newest way to conquer cancer.

Doctors have been offering genetic testing to patients for several years, and have pinned their hopes on finding the needle in the haystack.

There is a database of results on nearly 4,000 tumor samples. So far 40 percent of breast cancers have discrepancies between which genes are active in the main tumor and which ones are active where the cancer has spread.

Also, the scientists have discovered big differences from place to place in the same tumor as to which genes are active or mutated. This means the single biopsies, which doctors rely on to choose drugs are probably not giving them the information to make an informed choice.

This muddled picture gives researches no clue on how to individualize treatment. There are about 15 medicines on the market now and hundreds in the pipe lines, but so far they have had very limited success. The logical conclusion is this testing will fail to save lives.

Healthcare costs skyrocket and offer no help

It costs 5,000 to 10,000 to do basic gene analysis of the main tumor, and about 10 times as much to do the kind of testing that these scientists did.

Studies show that the single biopsy, which is the cornerstone of personalized-medicine decisions, and the view that you can direct therapy on the basis of genetic tumor markers, is too simple.

The single biopsy would reveal only a minority of mutations. The tumor can adapt to cancer medicines, even the ones that are specific. The cancer industry has no idea if doing more biopsies would improve accuracy, or how many or how often they should be done.

Dr. Gordon Mills, co-director of the Institute for Personalized Cancer Therapy knows this is important. This is the problem as he sees it; in the future scientist will find out a lot of information and will not know what to do with it.

“There will be times when one biopsy suggests a certain mutation is driving the cancer and another biopsy suggest a different one is.”

Cancer and BRAC1 and BRAC2 Gene Mutations

(NaturalHealth365) This is a harder than usual project, there just isn’t enough studies or information. The biggest problem is the research and conclusions are based on a limited understanding of health.

BRAC1 and BRAC2

Everyone has BRAC1 and BRAC2 genes. They perform a very important function, which is to repair cell damage and keep breast cells growing normally. The genes are only a problem when they contain abnormalities or mutations when they are passed down from previous generations. When the genes aren’t functioning normally the breast cancer risks increases. Abnormal BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes account for anywhere from three to five percent or 5 to 10 percent of all breast cancers depending who you listen to.

Both BRCA genes are tumor suppressor genes, which produce proteins that are used by the cell to make repairs to the DNA molecules that have double stranded breaks.
Women with mutations to the in either BRCA1 and BRCA2 have a higher risk of breast cancer, around five times the normal risk and a risk of ovarian cancer that is ten to thirty times the norm. BRCA1 mutations carry a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer than the BRCA2 mutations. Women with an abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene also have an increased risk of developing ovarian, colon, pancreatic, and thyroid cancers, as well as melanoma.

These mutations can be inherited from both parents; sons and daughters are both at risk. Each child of a genetic carrier has a 50% chance of inheriting the mutated gene. Half the people with BRCA gene mutations are male. Men have a very low chance of developing breast cancer, but this mutation can increase the risk of colon cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer.

Facts

Having an abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene doesn’t mean you will get breast cancer. Research is just finding that other mutations in parts of the chromosomes called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) may be linked to higher breast cancer risks in women with a BRCA1 mutation as well as women without it.

There is a greater proportion of ovarian cancer caused by these genes. Breast cancer is so prevalent that more women develop breast cancer than ovarian cancer. The estimates are hundreds of thousands of cancer free women worldwide may have mutations in these genes.

In the early part of the 1990’s these genes were first identified. What this really says we are in the acute phase of trying to make head or tail out of what was discovered. It reminds me of the HIV/AIDS epidemic panic. We didn’t understand what we were dealing with at the time. Even oncologists aren’t sure if everyone should be tested. There is reason to believe that women with the mutated gene respond better to treatment.

The fact is most people don’t know what genes they have. There are plenty of people who haven’t a clue to who had what a few generations ago. Yes, there are women who watched almost everyone in their family have a bout with breast cancer.

Having a high-risk mutation does not guarantee a woman will develop any type of cancer, or that any cancer that appears was actually caused by the mutation, rather than some other factor, like alcohol use, poor diet, environment factors, stress and lack of exercise. All these are known to contribute to breast cancer.

Formulations

BRAC1 and BRAC2 have brought about a level of fear without demonstrating all the variables.

Variations of the BRCA1, BRCA2, CDH1, PTEN, STK11, and TP53 genes increase the risk of developing breast cancer. Also, the AR, ATM, BARD1, BRIP1, CHEK2, DIRAS3, ERBB2, NBN, PALB2, RAD50, and RAD51 genes are associated with breast cancer.

As of yet there has been no research on the role of diet and lifestyle on these two genes. The triggers for cancer are usually the sum total of a cascade of events that stimulate the ability for these cells to take hold.

If anyone thinks that taking off both breasts and ovaries will make them healthy is in for a surprise. Taking a lot of drugs to keep cancer at bay and getting mammograms every year is not really prevention. What it is may be a way of blocking cancer from developing in either the breast or ovaries. What is forgotten you still have plenty of places for it to develop, these mutated genes puts other organs at risk.

According to medical websites prophylactic surgery reduces the risk of breast cancer by 90%, it doesn’t guarantee it will never happen. You can still have a chance though a small one of cancer developing in the breast tissue that a surgeon has to leave behind. Again this surgery doesn’t make you healthier; you still need to follow a healthy lifestyle.

The only formula for avoiding any disease is to stay healthy. When you think health you do everything to stay healthy from consuming beneficial foods, stress reduction, exercising, using natural household and personnel products, and getting enough sunshine in your life.

Inflammation and Cancer

(NaturalHealth365) Nuclear factor-kappaB is a complex of potent proteins, which are kept in an inactive form in the cytoplasm of the cell. When the cell is stressed in some way the cell tries to protect itself. The stresses come from: radiation, toxic chemicals, and nutritional depletion, high carbohydrates, and lack of exercise.

Considering NF-kB regulates the expression of almost 400 different genes, the activation of NF-kB through a whole host of stresses isn’t desirable. NF-kB stimulates genes to produce inflammatory cytokines and other molecules that promote cancer. Because of the strong link of NF-kB with different stress signals, it has been named the “smoke-sensor” of the body.

Activated NF-kB fragments trigger cell differentiation. This means more cells goes from a resting state to a proliferation state, making more copies of the cell. When NF-Kb is activated cells develop survival techniques and resist both cell suicide and chemotherapy drugs. The bottom line is that NF-kB when activated promotes malignancy.

NF-Kb and Inflammation

Some recent studies have tied chronic inflammation to the expression of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB). NF-kappa B (NF-KB) acts like a switch to turn on genes that produce inflammation. NF-kappaB’s expression increases in maturing individuals. This may be the reason cancer rates rise with age.

NF-kB is the premium regulator of the cancer-causing process. Once NF-kB triggers the events that link inflammation with the development of cancer, it continues to contribute to cancer cells ability to grow and spread.

It is a fact that most to all cancers have abnormally high levels of active NF-kB, which keeps them in a state of inflammation. Why this is the smoking gun: inflammation is a must in order for cancer cells to proliferate and spread.

What Turns on NF-Kb?

By understanding what turns on nuclear factor-kappa beta and its role in inflammation will assure both health and longevity. Since inflammation is responsible for a host of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, asthma, and Alzheimer’s it is imperative that we understand the common denominator. NF-kB is the sensor that detects threats like free radicals and infections and in response turns on the genes in charge of inflammation.

There is also very good research that tracks the dietary connection to NF-kB signaling. Most of the research into this explores the role that high-glycemic index carbohydrates have. These foods have been showed to increase the NF-kappa B levels. Any sudden spike in glucose will raise the NF-kB level.

The current thinking is that a high-carb combined with a high fat diet will cause inflammation. While the evidence for low carb even with high fat may reduce NF-kappaB.

What Turns Off NF-Kb?

What blocks NF-kB will block a host of chronic conditions. It is estimated that anywhere from 67%to 90% of cancers are preventable. The consensus is health is dependent on lifestyle factors. Phytochemicals in fruits, vegetables, and spices turn off the inflammatory responses. So, it is no surprise that NF-kB is suppressed by a whole food diet.

Antioxidants are being studied for their NF-kB-blocking ability. These include vitamins C and E, carotenoids, glutathione, lipoic acid, flavonoids, polyphenols, selenium, zinc, milk thistle, curcumin, garlic extract, ginger, isoflavones found in the bean family and omega-3 fatty acids. Besides all the above, there is now growing evidence that vitamin D, ashwagandha and pomegranate extracts have NF-kB blocking activity.

Raw Fruits and Vegetables Override Genes

(NaturalHealth365) The fact that fruits and vegetables override genetic expression isn’t a surprise. The surprise is that it takes scientific research so long to find out what naturopathic physicians know. They always seem surprised at findings, which are common sense deductions.

A genetic variant which significantly raises the risk of heart disease can be modified by eating plenty of fruit and raw vegetables so that the carrier’s risk of heart disease is brought down to the same level as those without the faulty gene, researchers from McMaster and McGill universities, Canada, reported in the journal PLoS Medicine.

Facts

The long-held belief that you cannot change the genes you inherited from your parents does not appear to hold true, the authors explained.

The 9p21 genetic variants, the strongest marker for heart disease, were found to be modified when large quantities of raw vegetable, berries and fruit were consumed.

Joint lead-researcher, Dr. Jamie Engert, said:
“We know that 9p21 genetic variants increase the risk of heart disease for those that carry it. But it was a surprise to find that a healthy diet could significantly weaken its effect.”

Wow what a surprise, a healthy diet changes the outcome of an inherited trait, or so called genetic variant.

The researchers gathered data on over 27,000 people from various ethnic ancestries, including Arab, Latin American, Chinese, South Asian and European. They studied what effects diet might have on the functioning and behavior of the 9p21 gene. The authors say that theirs is one of the largest gene-diet interaction studies ever carried out on cardiovascular disease.

They found that people with the high risk genetic variant which considerably raises heart disease risk, ended up having the same risk of heart disease as the rest of the population if they followed a diet rich in raw vegetables, fruit and berries.

“We observed that the effect of a high-risk genotype can be mitigated by consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables,” said Sonia Anand, joint principal investigator of the study, and a researcher at the Population Health Research Institute and a professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University.

Lead author, Dr. Ron Do, wrote:
“Our research suggests there may be an important interplay between genes and diet in cardiovascular disease. Future research is necessary to understand the mechanism of this interaction, which will shed light on the underlying metabolic processes that the 9p21 gene is involved in.”

Family Diet

What we are really looking at is the comparison of apples and oranges. They may be missing the point. What you learn to eat at the family table may be the strongest indicator of the risk. The way you grow your body depends on what you put into it. Where obesity, heart disease and diabetes run in a family so do the eating patterns.

Doctors prescribe – No Genetically Modified Foods

(NaturalHealth365) “It looks the same—the bread, pies, sodas, even corn on the cob. So much of what we eat every day looks just like it did 20 years ago. But something profoundly different has happened without our knowledge or consent. And according to leading doctors, what we don’t know may already be hurting us big time.

In May 2009, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) publicly condemned genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our food supply, saying they posed “a serious health risk.” They called on the US government to implement an immediate moratorium on all genetically modified (GM) foods, and urged physicians to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients.

GM-What?

Genetic engineering is quite distinct from selective breeding because it involves taking genes from a completely different species and inserting them into the DNA of a plant or animal. The long term effects of this for our health and our planet’s biodiversity are unknown.

AAEM, an “Academy of Firsts,” was the first US medical organization to describe or acknowledge Gulf War Syndrome, chemical sensitivity, food allergy/addiction, and a host of other medical issues. But the potential for harm from GMOs dwarfs anything they have identified thus far. It can impact everyone who eats.

More than 70% of the foods on supermarket shelves contain derivatives of the eight GM foods on the market—soy, corn, oil from canola and cottonseed, sugar from sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, and a small amount of zucchini and crook neck squash. The biotech industry hopes to genetically engineer virtually all remaining vegetables, fruits, grains, and beans (not to mention animals).

The two primary reasons why plants are engineered are to allow them to either drink poison, or produce poison. The poison drinkers are called herbicide tolerant. They’re inserted with bacterial genes that allow them to survive otherwise deadly doses of toxic herbicide. Biotech companies sell the seed and herbicide as a package deal, and US farmers use hundreds of millions of pounds more herbicide because of these types of GM crops. The poison producers are called Bt crops. Inserted genes from the soil bacterium Bacillus Thuringiensis produce an insect-killing pesticide called Bt-toxin in every cell of the plant. Both classes of GM crops are linked to dangerous side effects.

Doctors and Patients: Just Say No to GMOs

“Now that soy is genetically engineered,” warns Ohio allergist Dr. John Boyles, “it is so dangerous that I tell people never to eat it.” How dangerous are GM foods? World renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava, PhD, believes they may be a major reason for the recent rise in serious illnesses in the US.

The range of what GMOs might do to us is breathtaking. “Several animal studies,” according to the AAEM, reveal a long list of disorders, including: “infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, [faulty] insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen and gastrointestinal system.”

“There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects,” says the AAEM position paper. Based on established scientific criteria, “there is causation.”

Difficult to Trace the Damage

Outside the carefully controlled laboratory setting, it is more difficult to confidently assign GMOs as the cause for a particular set of diseases, especially since there are no human clinical trials and no agency that even attempts to monitor GMO-related health problems among the population. “If there are problems,” says biologist David Schubert, PhD, of the Salk Institute, “we will probably never know because the cause will not be traceable and many diseases take a very long time to develop.”

GM crops were widely introduced in 1996. Within nine years, the incidence of people in the US with three or more chronic diseases nearly doubled—from 7% to 13%. Visits to the emergency room due to allergies doubled from 1997 to 2002. And overall food related illnesses doubled from 1994 to 2001, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Obesity, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, and autism are also among the conditions that are skyrocketing in the US.

The Lyme Induced Autism Foundation, a patient advocacy group, is not waiting for studies to prove that GMOs cause or worsen Lyme, autism, and the many other diseases on the rise since gene-spliced foods were introduced. Like AAEM, the LIA Foundation says there is more than enough evidence of harm in animal feeding studies for them to “urge doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets” and for “individuals, especially those with autism, Lyme disease, and associated conditions, to avoid” GM foods.

Another patient group, those suffering from eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS), is more confident about the GMO origins of their particular disease. It was caused by a genetically engineered brand of a food supplement called L-tryptophan in the late 1980s. It killed about 100 Americans and caused 5,000-10,000 people to fall sick or become permanently disabled. The characteristics of EMS made it much easier for authorities to identify the epidemic and its cause. It only affected those who consumed the pills; symptoms came on almost immediately; and its effects were horrific—including unbearable pain and paralysis. There was even a unique, easy-to-measure change in the white blood cell count. But even though EMS was practically screaming to be discovered, it still took the medical community more than four years—and it was almost missed.

“The experiments simply haven’t been done and we now have become the guinea pigs.” David Suzuki, renowned Canadian geneticist.  What if the GMOs throughout our food supply are creating common diseases which come on slowly? It would be nearly impossible to confirm them as the cause. “Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients,” says AAEM president Dr. Jennifer Armstrong, “but need to know how to ask the right questions.” The patients at greatest risk are the very young. “Children are the most likely to be adversely effected by toxins and other dietary problems” related to GM foods, says Dr. Schubert. They become “the experimental animals,” our collective canaries in the coal mine.

Warnings by Government Scientists Ignored and Denied

Scientists at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had warned about all these problems back in the early 1990s. According to secret documents made public from a lawsuit, the scientific consensus at the agency was that GM foods were inherently dangerous, and might create hard-to-detect allergies, poisons, new “super” diseases, and nutritional problems. They urged their superiors to require rigorous long-term tests. But the White House had ordered the agency to promote biotechnology and the FDA responded by recruiting Michael Taylor, Monsanto’s former attorney, to head up the formation of GMO policy. That policy, which is in effect today, denies knowledge of the scientists’ concerns and declares that no safety studies on GMOs are required. It is up to Monsanto and the other biotech companies—who have a long history of lying about the toxicity of their earlier products—to determine if their own foods are safe.

After overseeing GMO policy at the FDA, Mr. Taylor worked on GMO issues at the USDA, and then later became Monsanto’s vice president. In the summer of 2009, he went through the revolving door again. Taylor was appointed by the Obama administration as the de facto US food safety czar at the FDA.

Dangerously Few Studies, Untraceable Diseases

“Where is the scientific evidence showing that GM plants/food are toxicologically safe, as assumed by the biotechnology companies?” This was the concluding question posed in a 2007 review of published scientific literature on the health risks of GM plants, showing that the number of studies and available data are “very scarce.”
“The experiments simply haven’t been done and we now have become the guinea pigs,” says renowned Canadian geneticist David Suzuki. He adds, “Anyone that says, ‘Oh, we know that this is perfectly safe,’ I say is either unbelievably stupid or deliberately lying.”

Kicking out GMOs – for Everybody

When consumers realize the dangers of GM foods and that the FDA has abdicated its responsibility to protect us, they usually want to opt out of this massive feeding experiment. In fact, most Americans already say they would avoid GMO brands if given a choice.

It wouldn’t take a majority of us to kick GMOs out of our food supply. Kraft and other food companies wouldn’t wait until half their market share is gone before telling their suppliers to switch to the non-GM corn, soy, etc. By using GM ingredients, they don’t offer customers a single advantage. The food doesn’t taste better, last longer, or have more nutrients. Thus, if even a tiny percentage of US consumers—say 5% or 15 million people—started avoiding GMO brands, the millions in lost sales revenue would likely force brands to remove all GM ingredients, like they already have in Europe.

But the FDA doesn’t want to give us the choice. They ignore the wishes of nine out of ten Americans for mandatory GMO labeling in order to promote the economic interests of just five biotech companies.  Fortunately, with so many health-conscious consumers clamoring for non-GMO options, many brands, particularly those serving the natural food industry, voluntarily label or promote their products as Non-GMO. Conclusions drawn in the previous chapters of the book are based upon a quarter of a century of studying cloned cells and are grounded in the astonishing new discoveries that are rewriting our understanding of the mysteries of life. The conclusions I offer in this Epilogue are also based upon my scientific training they do not spring from a leap of religious faith. I had heard an undeniable inner voice informing me that I was leading a life based not only on the false premise that genes control biology, but also on the false premise that we end when our physical bodies die.

I had spent years studying molecular control mechanisms within the physical body and at that astounding moment came to realize that the protein switches that control life are primarily turned on and off by signals from the environment the Universe.

You may be surprised that it was science that led me to that moment of spiritual insight. In scientific circles, the word spirit is as warmly embraced as the word evolution is in fundamentalist circles. As you know, spiritualists and scientists approach life in vastly different ways. When life is out of whack for spiritualists, they beseech God or some other invisible force for relief. When life is out of whack for scientists, they run to the medicine cabinet for a chemical. It is only with a drug like Rolaids that they are able to spell relief.

The fact that science led me to spiritual insight is appropriate because the latest discoveries in physics and cell research are forging new links between the worlds of Science and Spirit. These realms were split apart in the days of Descartes centuries ago. However, I truly believe that only when Spirit and Science are reunited will we be afforded the means to create a better world.
