Exercise – is it the key to health and longevity?

(NaturalHealth365) If you’ve ever read Growing Old Is Not for Sissies by Etta Clark, you may have already answered this question. The book is a collection of portraits of senior athletes – folks who are in exceptional shape at advanced ages. This certainly serves as evidence for the benefits of exercise.

Meet the 100 year old – aerobic instructor

As an example, one of the people included is Ida Kline, a 100-year-old aerobics instructor. Considering the fitness level of the average person, you’d probably agree that this is amazing. Are these people blessed with exceptional genes or extraordinary willpower? Or is this doorway to health open for everyone to walk through?

Abundant research indicates that anyone regardless of age can get into fantastic shape, yet 25 to 35 percent of Americans choose to remain inactive. Perhaps people who exercise appear to have more willpower due to how exercise affects the brain.

Katherine Hobson on health.usnews.com – cites a review published by the Association of Psychological Science:

They were especially complimentary towards physical activity. “What is most impressive to us,” the authors write, “is the evidence demonstrating benefits of aerobic physical exercise on cognitive functioning in older adults.” Studies in both animals and humans “overwhelmingly” indicate that exercise helps the brain, they write, both generally and also specifically in executive functioning (things like deciding to change behavior or planning ahead), short-term memory, and focusing and maintaining attention.

Exercise improves brain function

Arthur Kramer, a neuroscientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and one of the report’s authors, said at a news conference Wednesday that there’s enough evidence to launch a public policy campaign that includes an endorsement of exercise to improve brain function.

The euphoric feeling of a great workout may be just the cocktail you’ve been waiting for. Your body becomes flooded with endorphins during exercise that give you greater confidence to tackle the other challenges of your life. Hobson continues:

It doesn’t surprise John Ratey, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School and author of Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain. Exercise, like mental stimulation, provides a “challenge” to the brain, he says. “The brain needs to get the message that we need it to keep functioning,” says Ratey.

How to develop your brain – while you walk

A bunch of different mechanisms are thought to be responsible for the exercise-brain connection, including a growth factor called FGF-2 that is produced by exercise and is thought to be involved in the generation of new neurons. The authors of the new report emphasized the benefits of moderate exercise, saying that while walking distance was related to cognitive ability (the more you walk, the better), walking speed was not.

That’s certainly healthful, but Ratey says there might be additional benefits gained by interval training – short bursts of intense activity followed by rest periods. When you exercise more intensely, your brain produces human growth hormone that cuts belly fat, adds muscle, and “pump(s) up” brain volume, Ratey explains in Spark. It also produces more nitric oxide than steady training, he told me this week. “That’s the cardiologist’s best friend; it does so many good things for the vascular system,” he says, including acting as a “Roto-Rooter” for your small blood vessels.

Exercise will extend the quality of your life!

The August 10, 2009 Science Daily reported research from an Aerobics Center longitudinal study that examined one’s fitness level as a predictor of mortality. It studied 14,811 women who exhibited high fitness levels; one dramatic finding was that they were 55 percent less likely to die from breast cancer than women who were not as fit. This percentile rating was reflected in another independent study by Dr. Ralph Paffenbarger of Harvard University. This study included 17,000 male Harvard alumni. Dr. Paffenbarger and associates discovered that those men who exercised more than 10 hours a week and in those workouts burned up 3,500 calories on average had a 54 percent lower risk of death than those who didn’t exercise.

Naturally, there are ways to get the most from whatever type of exercise program you choose. I personally have chosen high-intensity resistance-based exercises. Why? For the same reason Dr. John Ratey states: the release of Human Growth Hormone that is triggered by intensity. As we age, HGH declines by around 14 percent per decade.

Intense exercise allows you to create and release more Human Growth Hormones (HGH)

Most people, by the time they become seniors, have seen the reverse of that youthful physical body: fat overtakes muscle and big changes in mood take place. It doesn’t have to be that way. Vaccine success rates exposed as fraud

(NaturalHealth365) Do people that abstain from vaccines really place society at a risk? People that abstain from vaccines or that insist on following a modified vaccination schedule are not out there to put the the rest of the population at risk. They are there to save themselves and their children from an uncertain future that is much more likely and more treacherous than a case of chicken pox or mumps.

Think about your future child’s health – in the modern world – as a house of cards. Think of vaccines as one card, alongside other risky habits and influences such as fried foods, environmental pollutants, heavy metals and more. Pulling one or two cards out may not collapse the house, but eventually, after enough cards are pulled, the house will fall.

We need to be asking the tough questions of healthcare providers

Let’s stop blindly allowing our schools, governments, and doctors (and the companies that insure them) to make choices for us. We must be aware of the delicacy of our own house of cards if we don’t want our children caught underneath the rubble.

The purpose of vaccines and the concept of group immunity
When vaccines were first developed, medical scientists were just beginning to understand what a virus was and how it behaved over time. Today, infectious disease epidemiologists have discovered that almost every viral epidemic follows a unique pattern.

At first, the virus proves to be highly fatal. Over time, as more and more people contract the disease and overcome it, building immunity, the virus becomes less lethal and more “tame”. In short, the more exposure a population has to a particular virus, the faster it establishes what is called “group immunity”, a term that refers to the collective immunity of a specific population.

Tackling the myth – “Vaccines saved us from polio, measles & whooping cough”

When you read through the hard data on the movement of measles and polio infections throughout the U.S. and the United Kingdom, it is impossible for vaccines to take the credit for the virtual elimination of these killer diseases. From 1915 to 1958, before the measles vaccine was introduced, the death rate from measles had already declined by 98 percent. (1) And between 1923 and 1953, the polio death rate had steadily dropped by 47 percent in the U.S. and by 55 percent in England before the polio vaccine was introduced. Many epidemiologists assert that the polio virus was already on its way out, that group immunity was being achieved, and that the incidence would have continued to decrease on its own, regardless of the introduction of the vaccine.

Data compiled by several sources in Australia including the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirms that the Australian population had already developed group immunity to measles, rubella, diphtheria, and whooping cough before the first vaccines were administered. In fact, in every instance, deaths had already plummeted by over 90 percent before the first vaccine was administered. (2, 3, 4, 5)

If vaccines are more effective than group immunity – explain Scarlet Fever?

Scarlet fever, a disease with no vaccine, followed the same pattern of group immunity. Despite the fact that there remains NO vaccine against scarlet fever, no large sustained epidemics of scarlet fever have broken out in the U.S. population.

From Sugar Cubes to Shots
In the beginning, vaccines such as the polio vaccine were administered on sugar cubes (Sabin’s weakened live polio vaccine). People were lining up until the early 1960s to ingest their polio sugar cubes. The wisdom of oral vaccines was that it allowed the gut’s mucous membranes to respond to the weakened live virus and develop a more refined immune response.

Over time, vaccine makers began favoring injections over oral administration. This represented the first time in human history that we injected a living virus directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the normal filters of the body – the gut, nose, lungs, mouth, eyes, and ears. By vaccine researcher’s own admission, manufacturing vaccines is an imperfect science that often results in unintended pathogenic contaminants.

Consequences of injecting vaccines into infants with undeveloped immune systems
The danger with injecting vaccines directly into pregnant mothers and infants is that both the fetus and infant have undeveloped immune systems. The injected vaccine bypasses the normal immune filters, directly challenging their premature immune systems.

In fact, there are dozens of published studies confirming that injected vaccines are triggering a significant and sometimes prolonged inflammatory response in the body. It is this inflammatory response that has caused holistic doctors, autism researchers, and parents to cry foul and demand that we as a society re-evaluate our vaccination programs.

When compared to unvaccinated children, vaccinated children have up to a 500 percent increased incidence of childhood illness and allergies – modern epidemics that medical science has been unable to thwart. (6), (7), (8)

Another destructive substance that destroys beneficial bacteria is man-made chemicals from air pollution, pharmaceutical drugs and insecticides in our food supply.

Friendly bacteria are absolutely essential for control of the bacteria, yeast and other parasites that populate the intestinal track. Over 10 years ago – the United States Congress was told the truth about cancer

On June 7 and 8, 2000 – Burton Goldberg, often referred to as “The Voice of Alternative Medicine” – addressed the United States Congress at a hearing on “Integrative Oncology – Cancer Care for the New Millennium”. A portion of this presentation has been posted – below:

“A century ago, one in 33 people had cancer; today, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), it is more than one in three, and growing. When I was born in 1926, cancer was the tenth leading cause of death among children – now I am 73 and it is second. No other health topic today has the urgency of cancer because no other health condition is escalating as fast.”

“In March of this year, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released its Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, 1973-1997. According to the report, some types of cancer had declined more or less, while others had increased. But the NCI proudly trumpeted the fact that for the first time ever in this country, overall cancer incidence and mortality rates had both declined from 1990 through 1997. The amount of decline was the same for both: 0.8%.”

“Taking this number at face value (the field report’s raw data has yet to be analyzed by objective sources), while it might be statistically significant, this less than 1% decline pales in the face of the grim reality of the ACS’s prediction that one out of two men in this country will get cancer. Or that, while in 1950 one out of 20 women got breast cancer, in 1960 it was one in 14, and today it is one out of eight.”

Conventional medicine still admits ignorance as to the causes of cancer: without knowing the cause how can there be prevention and cure?

Burton goes on to say: “Our message is simple, direct, and lifesaving: cancer can be – is being – successfully reversed using alternative medicine. Although many of the alternative methods for treating cancer have been with us for perhaps 50 years, it is only recently that these approaches have achieved major clinical breakthroughs and moved into wider public awareness. I wish I had known more about them myself when my sister and my mother were dying of cancer.”

What exactly is a healthy diet?

(NaturalHealth365) You could probably come up with a thousand different opinions as to what a healthy diet is. The marketplace is crammed full of books old and new on this subject. There’s high-fat, low-fat, no-fat, low-carb, high-carb, high-protein, low-protein, no-salt, good-salt, dairy, no-dairy, eggs, no-eggs, cooked-meat, no-meat, raw-meat, or just plain raw.

How are we to make a fully informed decision about a healthy diet?

This subject is so often loaded with personal bias and emotion that the topic of diet has taken on a religious fervor. Bear in mind, diet gets very personal. Food is both pleasure and survival. So I’ll attempt to go about this gingerly.

Let’s then explore some insights as to how we can get the most benefits from what we eat.

Let’s begin with something most people agree on – gratitude.

Gratitude and anticipation begin the digestive process. Just thinking about food begins to get the saliva flowing, and gratitude is believed to enhance the saliva’s potency. Whether or not scientific evidence of the latter is forthcoming, can we not all afford a moment of silent appreciation? Doing so calms the stomach and nervous system.

The fact is that digestion begins before any food is consumed. Just the sight and smell of food start the process. Imagine slicing a fat, juicy lemon and then taking a piece and biting into it. What just happened to your saliva?

Our bodies secrete saliva via the submaxillary glands through ducts in the mouth. In order for us to avoid the common ailments most people suffer with, not only must the food be nutritious, it must be absorbed and assimilated properly. This also means proper hydration, since we produce five to seven 8-ounce glasses of saliva per day.

We can’t underestimate the value of healthy saliva

Not only does saliva provide fluids to move food along and initiate swallowing, it provides lipase to begin fat digestion, amylase to break down starch into simple sugars, electrolytes for electrical transmission over the cell’s surface, mucus, glycoprotein, and many more vital chemicals. Saliva also contains powerful antibacterial compounds.

An interesting discovery, in this regard, happened at the University of Florida at Gainesville. In studying rodent saliva, they identified what’s called Nerve Growth Factor. (NGF)

NGF is a potent antibacterial agent that, when an animal licks a wound, doubles the speed at which it heals. Is it possible that similar chemicals will be discovered in human saliva after a person has given thanks for their food? Time will tell.

Our digestive and metabolic enzymes are the key to health

Unfortunately, we’re told we only possess a limited supply from birth. When we tax our supply or run short, we encounter nutritional deficiencies, and health suffers. The foods we choose to eat also play a vital role in this.

Each vegetable, fruit, seed, and nut contains enough enzymes to digest itself. When we completely chew or masticate our food before swallowing, we assist the plant enzymes in predigesting themselves. Please don’t dilute your saliva by drinking fluids at this point in a meal.

This tip is a great boon for high levels of health and youthfulness: The consumption of raw, organic fruits and veggies is a great way to prevent overtaxing the liver, pancreas, and other organs and leave more vital force and energy available to us. Cooking food or exposing it to temperatures above the range of 104°F to 118°F destroys the plant enzymes, throwing a bigger burden on our internal supply of metabolic enzymes.

Eating foods that we’re not by nature designed to eat shortens life span and invites disease.

What does this say about that tasty T-bone steak? Even eating it raw challenges the digestion. Not just because you don’t have the right kind of teeth for it, but also because a carnivore’s stomach secretes ten times more hydrochloric acid than a human is capable of.

Additionally, getting meat through the body and eliminated before it rots can be a challenge, since our small intestines are up to four times longer than a natural meat eater’s intestine. And of course, getting parasites, salmonella, E. coli, and other pathogens – not to even mention drugs – out of the system as soon as possible might be a good thing, don’t you agree?

There really is a big anatomical difference between a vegetarian animal and a carnivore.

This difference explains why a carnivore’s liver isn’t clogged with toxic uric acid, which is released into the body by the breakdown of animal protein. Carnivores eliminate ten times the uric acid you and I do. Our saliva is alkaline, which serves us perfectly with fruits and veggies, especially in their natural raw state; this isn’t the case with animal products.

Naturally, you’re free to disregard these observations. I fully understand that changing one’s diet involves overcoming a great deal of resistance and sometimes ridicule. However, all we need do to determine the natural diet for humans is to look to our primate brethren.

Their hands are well adapted to picking fruits and similar foods. While it is speculated that they have the intellectual potential to use fire, you don’t see them cooking their food.

Building muscle on plant foods – is it possible?

I’m an avid bodybuilder, and my peers often protest that they can’t put on muscle and get stronger on a raw vegetarian diet. Do humans require meat for this accomplishment? Science confirms we’re 99 percent genetically identical to primates.

We share similar bones, organs, glands, and structure. Yet, put any chimp from the wild up against our strongest athletes and see what happens. Did you know a 100-pound chimp can deadlift 600 pounds? According to the Guinness Book of World Records, a chimp named Boma, who weighed 165 pounds, pulled 847 pounds – with ONE HAND!

And, a female chimp at the same Bronx Zoo in New York pulled 1260 pounds – WITH ONE HAND! Perhaps if we follow nature’s way we’ll get similar results.

Hopefully – this will shed new light on old habits.

Great ways to detoxify the body

(NaturalHealth365) A toxin is a substance which can damage a living organism. It seems that “toxins” have become a household word, since everything we eat, drink, breathe and lather on our body is potentially filled with foreign chemicals.

There are physical toxins like heavy metals, chlorine and most medications. Then there are biological toxins like yeasts, bacteria and viruses. If you don’t facilitate cleansing of these toxins, they can accumulate in your body and affect your health on a cellular level and ultimately compromise your immune system.

If you want to achieve or maintain vibrant health, you must be proactive about cleansing the toxins from your body.

Detoxification is a very broad and complex subject. Here are a few basic protocols to get you going in the right direction. Pick one method, apply it for several weeks then move on to the next adventurous step.

You will be pleasantly surprised to feel a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm for life.

1. Colonics
Before any type of cleansing occurs, the colon must be first in order. The colon can be likened to your body’s waste disposal system. A colon that is weak or spastic can create autointoxication, where numerous types of toxins are reabsorbed back into the blood steam and circulate throughout the whole body.

Seek out a licensed and board certified colonic therapist to help you.

2. Coffee Enemas
Enemas date back to the Egyptian times and until 1972, coffee enemas were described in the Merck Manual, a medical doctor’s text book. The caffeine in the coffee stimulates the bile ducts and helps to detox and flush out the liver. Green tea may also be used instead of coffee.

3. Wheat Grass Implants
While we are on the subject of cleansing the colon, wheat grass implants are also very beneficial. Wheat grass is contains concentrated vitamins and minerals and has the highest concentration of chlorophyll of any other plant. Chlorophyll is a great detoxifying agent and cellular regenerator.

4. Lemon and Olive Oil Shots
The liver is the main filter of the blood and thus can easily be burdened with physical and biological toxins. There are many types of liver flushes, but this simple daily shot can help you achieve great results.

(1) Organic Lemon
(1) Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Dash of Cayenne
(6) ounces of Purified Water

Chop up the lemon into pieces and add the water and olive oil. Blend at high speed in a Vita mix or powerful blender. Strain and drink and wait 1 hour before eating.

If you have never done any type of liver cleansing, start slowly with this and drink only a few ounces at a time throughout the day.

5. Parasite Cleanse
No one likes the idea of parasites crawling and living inside of our bodies, but the reality is that most of us have them, unless we have taken the time to do a parasite cleanse. Parasites dump their toxins into your body and feed off your cells and nutrients.

There are many parasite cleanses available at natural markets and online. My favorite and most reliable cleanse is Dr. Hulda Clark’s Parasite Cleanse. I prefer it over others because the purity of the products and the results I have seen personally and with patients.

Deceptive food labels on natural health products

(NaturalHealth365) Sad, but true – processed foods have literally taken over most health food stores. In fact, there is a new category of so-called healthy foods that are, in some ways, not even qualified to be called healthy. Food manufacturers deceive consumers by creating products with a touch of greens mixed with synthetic vitamins, preservatives and sweeteners.

Why should we be concerned with synthetic vitamins?

Almonds are super nutritious and can make a great milk substitute, especially if you are using the raw, organic variety. Almond milk and coconut milk, on the other hand, when bought in a carton may contain synthetic vitamins.

The truth is raw, organic almonds are expensive and to create one carton of almond milk – it would take many more almonds then are actually used in most commercially available brands. The food industry solution is to add synthetic vitamins to the finished product.

Food labels do NOT tell the whole truth about food quality

Store bought almond milk and coconut milk along with other seed and nut milks may contain synthetic vitamin A, vitamin D2, calcium carbonate and tocopheryl acetate – a synthetic version of vitamin E.

Synthetic vitamin A (Retinyl palmitate) is associated with birth defects, fractures and cancer. Other effects of isolated chemical vitamin A include tumor enhancement; joint problems; osteoporosis; dryness of the eyes, mouth and skin; enlargement of the liver and spleen and suppression of the immune system.

Buyer beware – not all vitamins are created equal

Next on list is vitamin D2 which can be toxic. Did you know that too much vitamin D2 can result in calcium crystals being deposited in the body – which can damage the heart, lungs and kidneys. By the way, vitamin D3 (the proper kind of vitamin D) is much harder to overdose on – as a supplement.

Calcium carbonate is a non-organic and unnatural source of calcium. Stay away from calcium carbonate. Back to tocopheryl acetate – one of the reasons that vitamin E has gotten a bad rap is that many studies were based on this (unnatural) synthetic form of vitamin E.

Much of the supplement industry has ZERO integrity

This new use of chemical vitamins has NOT been time-tested. For example, tricalcium phosphate has been found in almond milk; commonly used in porcelain and dental powders and as a bleaching agent in flour. Does this sound like something you want to eat?

In the 1990′s, the average adult consumed 470 milligrams of phosphorous containing food additives, but today it’s possible to get as much as 1,000 mg per day depending on ones diet. Do you think the cancer epidemic may be (in part) due to fortified and enriched foods?

Note: According to the Archives of Internal Medicine, older women who take synthetic vitamins are at an increased risk of developing heart disease and cancer.

Conventional science admits the danger of processed foods

Research done by Dr. Agnes Faye Morgan (University of California) reported that taking synthetic vitamins was worst than starvation. Animals fed synthetic vitamins had toxic reactions, which included degenerative diseases. She stated that the enrichment of processed foods with synthetic vitamins may “precipitate conditions worse than the original deficiency.”

In a study conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, 18,000 American men and women given a placebo or supplements of synthetic vitamin A. The researchers, led by Dr. Gilbert Omen, stopped the study because the group on nutritional supplements had a 28% higher incident of lung cancer.

Obviously, it pays to learn more about the food we eat. Don’t be fooled by “fortified” foods marketed as “healthy”. Buying synthetically fortified foods are the worst food choice – if you want to avoid disease.
