(NaturalHealth365) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released the latest autism numbers in March and in a continuing disturbing trend, the numbers are rising quickly. Just a few years ago, the number of children affected by autism was estimated to be 1 in 88 and now it is 1 in 68 – roughly a 30% increase.
Boys continue to be more affected than girls. In fact, 1 out of 42 boys will be diagnosed with autism compared to 1 in 189 girls. As usual, the discussion on what is causing the rise in the diagnosis of autism continues to be a source of debate.
Can we trust the data on autism rates?
The data the CDC uses is collected from 11 states that are from 2010 – data that is four years old, meaning the actual number of autism are higher than being reported. In fact, New Jersey autism numbers are really off the chart. One of the CDC collection sites is in New Jersey and in this particular geographic location – one in 45 children is being diagnosed with autism.
What’s going on here? This is the highest figure ever reported for a single site since the CDC started closely monitoring the 11 states in 2000. Researchers note that the cases have more than doubled in a decade.
Why are autism rates rapidly rising?
Is it ‘better diagnosis’? Yes, in some cases with more awareness, there will be more accurate diagnosis, but this is not the sole reason for the rise. As many healthcare professionals have already stated, one has to wonder if we are really looking at autism in an accurate way.
Even the CDC acknowledges that most children are not diagnosed with autism until the age of 4 – meaning they are not being diagnosed earlier and physicians and parents are missing the signs and valuable time in implementing strategies that can help.
Walter Zahorodny, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and autism expert says that better diagnosis is not what is driving the rising numbers in autism. Citing New Jersey’s continually rising numbers as an example he states “if the higher documented prevalence were only due to better detection, sooner or later the numbers would plateau and other states would catch up.”
Mr. Zahorodny believes older age parents having children is the reason for the rise in autism – a risk factor which has been linked to this disorder. Also, the new DSM-5 criteria outlining the criteria for autism would actually shift some children off the autism spectrum diagnosis and they would now be diagnosed with a social communication disorder.
What are the environmental factors for autism?
While some experts shy away from the link of environmental factors to autism, many do not. Dr. Philip Landigran continues to report on toxins that are linked to autism including lead, mercury and other toxic chemicals. Just two weeks ago, I wrote about the toxins linked to brain damage and birth defects – which discussed the link between autism and environmental toxins, backed by scientific research.
In addition, children living in more polluted areas, aluminum and mercury in vaccines and mitochondria disorders have all been linked to the rise in autism. We must go beyond ‘better’ diagnostic procedures and focus on result-oriented solutions.
What can we do for autistic children (and adults)?
If you suspect your child has autism, early diagnosis is key. Along with traditional therapies that will be recommended, using proven methods such as chelation therapy and a diet such as the gluten-free/casein-free or GAPS diet can really be helpful. Avoiding processed foods, especially those containing MSG, aspartame and artificial colors can have an impact on the severity of symptoms.
CEASE Therapy, developed by Tinus Smits, MD has helped children around the globe recover or make great strides. CEASE utilizes homeopathy and orthomolecular medicine to help children detox not only from environmental toxins, but medicines and other insults that contributed to their autism diagnosis. I have been using this method in my center for years with great success.
The bottom line is never to give up. Cleaning up the diet with whole organic foods, using natural chemicals to clean your home and using traditional and alternative methods of healing have helped many children recover.
