Chelating agents help children with autism

Autism News(NaturalHealth365) How can chelating agents actually help children with autism? We know that detoxification is an essential part of any optimal wellness program. Let’s take a closer look at the latest scientific research.

In the September 2012 issue of Maedica, German researchers examined 44 children aged 3 – 9 years old who were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and had heavy metal burden in their bodies – to see if DMSA would be helpful for these children. The Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) was used as a benchmark before and after DMSA treatments to measure improvement of autism characteristics.

Urine samples prior to and after the DMSA challenge test were collected and compared. Statistically significant differences were observed between the baseline urine and the DMSA challenge urine particularly in the levels of cadmium, mercury and lead. After six months of chelation, the children showed the greatest improvements in verbal and nonverbal communication; taste, smell and touch; and relating to people.

Researchers concluded that detoxification with oral DMSA is beneficial to children on the spectrum.

In 2009, the Journal of Toxicology published a study that investigated the relationship between children’s autism symptoms with their toxic metal body burden, red blood cell and glutathione levels. The children, in this study, were between 3-8 years of age. Researchers found multiple positive correlations were found between the severity of autism and the urinary excretion of toxic metals and found a significant positive association between the severity of autism and relative body burden of toxic metals.

BMC Clinical Pharmacology concluded that DMSA therapy seemed to be reasonably safe in children with ASD who have high urinary excretion of toxic metals and possibly helpful in reducing some of the symptoms of autism in those children. Children, in this study, received either one round or seven rounds of DMSA. All of the children improved on their ATEC (Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist) scores.

The results come as no surprise to me. As mentioned in an earlier blog post of the top ten toxins associated with autism; lead tops the list. At Healing4Soul.com is an article called ”Lead and its relationship to ADHD and autism” that outlines studies and includes tables with overlapping symptoms of lead with both of these conditions.

DMSA has the ability to chelate half of the elements on the periodic table – but it has a particular affinity for lead, mercury, cadmium, gold, platinum, thallium, barium and strontium. Although DMSA is widely available on the internet, I strongly believe working with a practitioner familiar with dosing is essential.

As a CEASE practitioner, detoxification is the starting point for all my clients. A thorough intake helps to identify what toxins, medications, environmental exposures and vaccinations could be contributing to the condition. I also utilize hair tissue analysis that screens for 20 minerals and toxic metals. This test is used around the world for the biological monitoring of trace elements and toxic metals in humans and animals species and the same technology is used for soil testing and testing of rock samples to detect mineral levels.

Armed with this information, I employ natural methods to help your body escort these insults out of the body. With autism in particular, detoxification is essential! Our motto at Healing 4 Soul is ‘We are here to educate, not medicate! We invite you to join us.

I am concerned about my grandson, who has been diagnosed with Autism, so I forwarded it on to his mother.

This is fascinating. So many physicians say to not chelate a child with autism and we went to a DO who ran a heavy metal profile and our son was high in lead. After using DMSA, EDTA and homeopathics prescribed from our homeopath, our son has made remarkable gains. We have decided when he enrolls in Kindergarten next year to not share his previous diagnosis. Thank you for this article and I will share with other mothers.

Follow Andrew Cutler’s protocol for how to use DMSA correctly. Also, the hair test he recommends is much safer than the provocation test described in this article. I used his protocol successfully. If you don’t use DMSA correctly you can hurt yourself.
