(NaturalHealth365) What is the right diet and cancer prevention program? All the popular diets have their claims and benefits. You can choose to be vegan or a raw foodist, endorse Traditional Chinese Medicine, or follow macrobiotic, Ayurvedic, or countless other diets, but we’re all betting that whatever diet we’ve chosen will protect us from dreaded diseases like cancer, heart disease, and other killers.
Can you trust what your body is telling you?
What I’ve personally found is that if we’re conscious of our taste tendencies, we’re usually drawn to eat the very foods that contain the nutrients our bodies are craving. Of course, many things we crave can be very harmful and become addictions we wish we didn’t have. However, a more natural, organic style of diet usually provides the things the body needs to deal with unhealthy states.
Many studies have been done confirming the relationship between poor diets and disease: for example, the SAD (Standard American Diet) has been linked to cancer. Without belaboring the evidence, we see many examples in the connection between nitrosamines that are loaded into cooked so-called “lunch meats” and cancer. This is just one of many points that can be made, and isn’t even taking into account all the other toxic chemicals ingested from our processed foods.
Yet, when we look to areas of the world where natural organic diets prevail, none of the high rates of cancer are seen that are common in industrialized countries.
Ancient wisdom and medicine can offer many cancer solutions
Let’s look at a cuisine that’s been popular in South India for the last 5,000 years – the Ayurvedic tradition. They use a seasoning blend that is composed of herbs, spices, and vegetables and referred to as “masala”. You’re probably well aware of the taste of hot curry powder. A basic masala is made with turmeric, peppercorns, cumin seeds, chili pods, mustard, fenugreek, coriander seeds, and curry leaves. Turmeric, which is a ginger-like root, contains within it a very powerful coloring agent that will stain almost anything yellow – it’s called curcumin.
Curcumin has recently come under medical investigation and has been found to be a very potent anti-cancer chemical.
I found this report by Dr. Mercola on his website, Mercola.com – “Cancer Cells Cannot Thrive Without This” which states: “Not long ago, researchers at the world-renowned University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center published a groundbreaking scientific review of their favorite anti-cancer nutrient – curcumin. Curcumin, along with several other nutrients, is remarkable in that it can actually tell the difference between a healthy cell and a cancer cell.”
Promote natural healing with non-toxic, healthy food ingredients
According to Wellness Resources, here is how the researchers explained their interest in curcumin: ‘Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) … is one of the most powerful and promising chemo preventive and anticancer agents … How curcumin exerts its powerful anticancer activities has been thoroughly investigated, and several mechanisms of action have been discovered … curcumin exerts its biological activities through epigenetic modulation.’ In other words, curcumin changes the regulation of DNA to help kill cancer.
In fact, curcumin not only influences epigenetic settings, it also manages the downstream consequences, helping to guide multiple steps in the way gene orders are implemented.
It’s been noted by researchers that curcumin inhibits and arrests the growth of cancer cells. Curcumin also protects against free radicals that damage DNA. It also increases immunity, especially with T-helper cells and B type immune cells.
In addition, older men will be encouraged by the finding that curcumin inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX), which is an enzyme that promotes inflammation and has been found to be the culprit in prostate cancer. Also, the same benefits apply to breast cancer and squamous cell carcinoma.
The first step toward preventing cancer – reduce inflammation
Here’s a little insight from the medical profession on COX: “The increase of evidence implicating COX-2 in cancer has stimulated clinical trials to investigate the efficacy of selective COX-2 inhibitors in individuals at risk for human cancer. Regarding prostate carcinoma there is much direct or indirect evidence to support the use of COX-2 inhibitors in this disease.”
Now we have evidence of curcumin’s role in inhibiting the COX enzyme. Additionally, curcumin blocks receptor sites for estrogen that encourage cell proliferation and mutation. All from a simple South Indian spice.
Curcumin also stops angiogenesis, which is the way tumors create their own blood supply. It appears all we need do to get rid of serious diseases is adopt a natural, organic diet and avoid ingesting the toxic chemicals of our modern lifestyle.
It all comes down to education and practice. Develop your taste buds along these lines and you’re bound to fare well. At least you’ll be in agreement with practical advice traveling the time-tested span of 5,000 years of experience. Good health to you!
