New Study: BPA found to increase blood pressure

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 3 adults – approximately 70 million – currently have high blood pressure. Another 1 in 3 adults is pre-hypertensive and at risk for developing high blood pressure in the future.

Sadly, as rates have risen over the years, it seems like hypertension is the new American ‘norm’.

So, while pharmaceutical companies only see dollar signs, researchers around the world have been working to find the source of rapidly rising rates of hypertension. And, what they have found is shocking. One chemical – bisphenol A – could be ravishing the health of millions of Americans. The bad news – most people are exposed to it every day.

A single BPA exposure can temporarily raise your blood pressure reading

A randomized trial in South Korea studied 60 people, all of whom were over age 60. On three separate occasions, the participants were asked to fast for more than 8 hours before drinking soy milk (a beverage less likely than other drinks to leach out BPA from a container). Participants were randomly asked to drink from two glass containers, two cans, or one of each.

After two hours and no additional food or beverages, those who consumed soy milk from a can were found to have significantly higher average systolic blood pressure than those who drank from glass bottles. Furthermore, those who drank from cans had measurably higher concentrations of BPA in their bodies than those who did not. In fact, the BPA levels were 1,600 times higher in those who drank from cans than in those who drank from glass bottles.

The findings are important – especially for those who suffer with high blood pressure. According to the study, just a single exposure to BPA is enough to elevate blood pressure within only a few hours. Just imagine what a lifetime of food and beverage consumption from BPA-laden cans and bottles can do.

Go BPA free to naturally lower your blood pressure

Unfortunately, most people drink from water bottles and eat canned foods on a regular basis. Prolonged, repeated exposure to BPA could lead to permanent hypertension. In addition, the higher levels of BPA in the body can block estrogen receptors – which play an important role in blood vessel repair.

This toxic substance has also been linked to other health issues including neurological disorders, hormonal disorders and even cancer.

Despite warnings from researchers and findings from BPA studies, the FDA continues to stand behind its approval of BPA in “limited quantities.” Yet it is impossible to regulate exactly how much BPA the average American consumes, when there are so few BPA free containers on the market.

As concerns have grown in recent years about the dangers of bisphenol A, it has become increasingly obvious that consumers must take these matters into their own hands. One way to avoid BPA exposure and naturally lower blood pressure is to drink from BPA free glass containers and consume only fresh (chemical free), organic foods. Of course, consumers should also demand greater transparency and stricter regulation of bisphenol A from government regulatory agencies that continue to ignore and cover up the findings about BPA safety.
