Unapproved fluoride supplement use for kids finally ends after 50 years

fda-cracks-down-on-fluoride-supplements(NaturalHealth365)  For decades, doctors across the U.S. have prescribed fluoride tablets and drops to infants as young as six months old, even though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) never approved these products.  That era may finally be coming to an end.

In a recent announcement, the FDA said it will begin taking compliance action against companies marketing unapproved fluoride-containing prescription products, particularly those sold for children under age 3 or for children not at high risk of tooth decay.

The agency’s internal review, completed in October 2025, revealed growing safety concerns surrounding the ingestion of fluoride, especially in babies and young children whose developing brains and thyroid glands are most vulnerable.

FDA admits: Fluoride supplements were never formally approved

In a stunning acknowledgment, the FDA stated that no fluoride supplements have ever undergone formal review or safety testing required for approved drugs.

Yet, these ingestible tablets and lozenges have been prescribed for more than half a century as a preventive measure against cavities, a recommendation long supported by the American Dental Association (ADA) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Science links fluoride ingestion to brain and thyroid harm

Earlier this year, a landmark JAMA Pediatrics review by U.S. government scientists found that early-life fluoride exposure was linked to lower IQ scores in children.  Other studies have linked fluoride ingestion to neurodevelopmental, thyroid, and metabolic disturbances, as well as dental fluorosis, the visible sign of fluoride overexposure.

“Given these findings,” the FDA’s own scientific evaluation concluded, “the evidence supports limiting the use of ingestible fluoride drug products to children aged three years and older who are at high risk of tooth decay.”

The agency further stated it will take enforcement action against any company promoting fluoride drugs for infants or for routine use in the general pediatric population.

Experts call it ‘a long-overdue step toward safety’

Dr. Griffin Cole, a biological dentist and board member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, praised the FDA’s decision as “long overdue.”

“This formal restriction finally acknowledges what science has shown for decades – that swallowing fluoride provides no real benefit, only risks,” Dr. Cole said.

The Fluoride Action Network (FAN), which first petitioned the FDA to ban fluoride supplements more than ten years ago, also applauded the move, noting it could protect hundreds of thousands of children already overexposed to fluoride through fluoridated water supplies.

Fluoride’s toxic legacy

Before 1938, sodium fluoride wasn’t a dental additive.  It was primarily used as a rat poison and industrial chemical.  By the 1940s, manufacturers began marketing it as a tooth-decay preventive and effectively “grandfathered” it for medical use, bypassing modern safety standards.

Despite ongoing evidence of harm, fluoride tablets have remained on pharmacy shelves – untested, unapproved, and widely prescribed.

The FDA’s latest action signals a long-awaited correction to this regulatory gap.  But as fluoride continues to flow through public water systems and dental products, experts say the issue of total body fluoride burden is far from over.

Natural solutions to reduce fluoride burden

Even after limiting exposure, many people have accumulated fluoride in their bones, thyroid, and pineal gland over the years.  Supporting your body’s detox pathways can help reduce this toxic load safely:

  • Support your liver and kidneys: Drink plenty of filtered water (ideally reverse osmosis) and eat sulfur-rich organic foods like garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables to enhance phase II detoxification.

  • Use boron and magnesium-rich foods: These minerals help counter fluoride’s binding in bone and soft tissues.  Organic avocados, almonds, and leafy greens are excellent choices.

  • Boost antioxidants: Vitamin C, selenium, and glutathione precursors support cellular protection and fluoride removal.

  • Avoid aluminum cookware and fluoridated toothpaste: These add to the total toxic burden and interfere with thyroid and brain health.

  • Consider detox protocols under expert guidance: Gentle strategies such as sauna therapy, castor oil packs, and liver cleanses can help support natural fluoride excretion.
