(NaturalHealth365) Genetically modified foods have long been a hotly debated topic in the United States, and the battle has only grown stronger in recent years. Studies from the Mellman Group and Consumers Union reveal that the vast majority of Americans – approximately 9 in 10 – believe that GMO foods are a threat to human health and should be labeled. In fact, research shows that Americans in favor of GMO consumer labeling span the lines of gender, age, education and political affiliation.

Unfortunately, the government and agricultural industry think differently. Now, they are attempting to put the final nail in the coffin by passing a reckless bill that bullies the American public into remaining uninformed and oblivious to the content of our food.

Huge warning about H.R. 1599: The ‘DARK Act’

H.R. 1599 is an anti-GMO labeling bill that has been ridiculously called the “Safe and Accurate Food labeling Act of 2015.” Those who have read the bill and understand its vile and depraved contents, however, are referring to it as the “Deny Americans the Right to Know,” or DARK Act. The bill, which only recently passed out of committee in the House of Representatives, attempts to strip away the rights of states and municipal governments to enforce GMO labeling.

Since the government has done nothing to support GMO labeling, some states have begun taking matters into their own hands, including Vermont – which passed a law requiring GMO labeling effective in the summer of 2016. If the DARK Act passes into law, it would supersede Vermont’s law and other laws like it, effectively making them null and void.

The U.S. government wants to take ‘GMO bullying’ to another level

As if the DARK Act weren’t already bad enough, its authors added to its content, taking bullying to a whole new level. Now, the bill will attempt to prevent food companies from referring to GMO foods as unsafe or promoting non-GMO foods as safer than GMO foods. Furthermore, H.R. 1599 will block states from protecting its farmers from pesticide drift and other economic and environmental consequences of GMO food production.

It is absolutely unthinkable that consumers in the United States of America – a country founded on freedom and liberty – soon may not have the right to know what is in their food. It is even more deplorable that money is the driving factor behind the effort to strip away a right held by people in at least 64 nations around the world.
