Simple way to measure how long you will live a healthy life
(NaturalHealth365) Doctors have relied on blood pressure and cholesterol numbers for decades, hoping those numbers could estimate how long someone might live. But a massive new analysis out of the University of Leicester suggests a simpler measure beats them both.
Researchers found that how fast a person walks predicted death risk more accurately than any other physical measure tested, including traditional clinical markers.
What researchers found across more than 400,000 adults
Published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings in March 2026, the study analyzed 407,569 UK Biobank participants. Researchers compared five simple physical measures against standard clinical predictors like blood pressure. Walking pace crushed them all.
Notably, the effect held strongest among people already living with long-term health conditions. In that group, walking pace sharpened mortality predictions even further compared with healthy adults. Funding came from the National Institute for Health and Care Research and the Medical Research Council, both public bodies, not a pedometer company with a product to sell.
Why a slower pace signals more than tired legs
Walking speed reflects far more than fitness alone. Cardiovascular capacity, muscle strength, balance, and nervous system function all combine into that single number. Consequently, a slowing pace often reveals decline across several body systems well before any single test would catch that decline.
A separate 2025 analysis of 431,598 UK Biobank adults found that walking speed also predicted cancer risk.
Faster walkers had lower rates of lung, breast, colorectal, and stomach cancer. Researchers traced part of that link to lower inflammation and healthier blood sugar among faster walkers.
How fast is fast enough, according to the research
Earlier research pooling over 34,000 older adults found that every 0.1 meter per second increase in walking speed corresponded to a 12 percent lower risk of death. Meanwhile, speeds at or above roughly one meter per second, brisk enough to cross a street before a light changes, were associated with above-average life expectancy. Speeds below 0.6 meters per second, however, were linked to a meaningfully higher risk.
Even so, the research remains observational, so a slow pace does not guarantee poor health for any one person. Genetics, existing conditions, and joint health also shape walking speed, independent of fitness.
Still, the consistency across cohorts numbering in the hundreds of thousands makes this a signal worth taking seriously.
Practical ways to build a faster, steadier walking pace
Add short bursts of brisk walking into an already normal routine. Alternating three minutes of normal pace with one minute of faster walking, repeated several times, trains the cardiovascular and muscular systems together. That interval approach builds walking speed more efficiently than walking at one steady pace for the same total time. Sidewalks, hallways, or a treadmill all work equally well for this pattern.
Strengthen the hips and calves that drive an efficient stride. Weak glutes and calves force smaller, slower steps, regardless of cardiovascular fitness. Bodyweight squats, calf raises, and step-ups, performed two or three times weekly, build the specific strength walking speed depends on. Stronger legs, in turn, translate directly into a longer, more confident stride.
Support joint comfort with anti-inflammatory foods that make movement easier. For example, wild-caught fatty fish, organic turmeric, and olive oil all carry research tied to lower joint inflammation, making a brisk pace easier to maintain. None of these foods replace the vitamin C, vitamin D, or zinc many people already rely on for broader health support. Rather, comfortable joints simply make consistent walking more likely to stick.
Track walking pace occasionally, not just step counts. Timing a normal walk over a known distance, for example, a city block, gives a real pace reading in under a minute. Repeating that same test every few months shows whether training efforts are actually paying off. Step counts alone can hide a slowing pace if strides simply get shorter over time.
Generally speaking, a healthy walking speed would be to cover one mile in about 15-20 minutes or 3-4 miles / hour.
Why this simple measure deserves more attention from doctors
A stopwatch and a hallway cost nothing, and yet walking pace rarely appears on a standard chart the way blood pressure does. Given how consistently this measure has outperformed pricier tests, it’s worth paying attention to. Cancer risk, heart disease, and overall mortality all showed up in the same simple number, no lab required.
