How does the ketogenic diet kill cancer cells

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Ketogenic Diet and Cacner(NaturalHealth365) Recently, the ketogenic diet has been touted as a ‘cure’ for cancer. Very popular websites – in the natural health world – magazines and medical experts have raved about its ability to kill cancer cells by feeding the body, primarily, a fat-based diet. But, we must ask a very simple question (before getting too excited) – where’s the scientific proof?

Carbohydrates are “bad” for cancer patients. We hear this all the time and it’s the main reason why the ketogenic diet has attracted so much attention – in recent years. In fact, for nearly 10 years, the world-famous diet doctor, Robert Atkins, M.D. actually used a ketogenic-type diet to (quietly) treat cancer patients. What were his results? And, is the ketogenic diet good for all types of cancer?

On the next NaturalNews Talk Hour, cancer expert Nicholas Gonzalez, M.D., who personally knew Dr. Atkins, will reveal the results of Dr. Atkins work with cancer patients eating a high-fat diet. Never publicly revealed before, Dr. Gonzalez will talk about the science behind the ketogenic diet.

What will history tell us about the success of the ketogenic diet for cancer patients?

Do you remember the hype surrounding interleukin-2 for cancer patients? Back in the 1990’s, interleukin-2 was touted as the ‘cure for cancer’ with as much passion as the ketogenic diet. But, as time went on, the reports of interleukin-2 toxicity and patient deaths (from treatment) started to pile up and the initial hysteria, obviously, went away.

Do NOT ignore the health dangers linked to toxic indoor air.  These chemicals - the 'off-gassing' of paints, mattresses, carpets and other home/office building materials - increase your risk of headaches, dementia, heart disease and cancer.

By the way, interleukin-2 treatments were very expensive – about $100,000 for just a few weeks of ‘therapy’. Naturally, following a ketogenic diet is far less expensive.

So, despite patient deaths, the media continued to promote interleukin-2 therapy for many years. And, finally, in 1998 – a clinical study (13 years after the initial hype) showed that interleukin-2, at least for kidney cancer, worked no better than placebo. Naturally, as the excitement over interleukin-2 faded away, by the late 1990’s, a ‘new’ therapy (bone marrow transplants) replaced the hysteria of the interleukin-2 protocol.

The ketogenic diet, at this point, is being added to a long line of heavily promoted ‘magic bullets’ for the treatment of cancer. But, with respect to this diet, are we making the same mistake or is this diet a cure for cancer?

The man behind the ‘ketogenic diet craze’

Most recently, the ketogenic diet has been popularized as a cure for cancer by Thomas N. Seyfried, Ph.D. – in his book, “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease”. Dr. Seyfried proposes that our normal cells do just fine in the absence of carbohydrates but cancer cells do not. So, based on the work of Dr. Otto Warburg, Dr. Seyfried suggests that a high-fat, no carbohydrate diet will effectively kill all types of cancer cells.

His ideas are really quite simple – if you avoid dietary sugar, cancer cells will die. But, there’s only one problem with this theory. How does Dr. Seyfried explain the success experienced by stage-IV cancer patients on primarily a vegetarian diet – loaded with carbohydrates, in the form of carrot / apple juice plus many other naturally-rich ‘sugary’ foods?

This week’s guest: Nicholas Gonzalez, M.D., an expert in nutritional therapies for cancer patients

Find out what practically no one else is saying about the ketogenic diet for cancer – Sun. Oct. 13

Nicholas J. Gonzalez, M.D., graduated from Brown University, Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude, with a degree in English Literature. He subsequently worked as a journalist, first at Time Inc., before pursuing premedical studies at Columbia. He then received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in 1983.

During a postgraduate immunology fellowship under Dr. Robert A. Good, considered the father of modern immunology, he completed a research study evaluating an aggressive nutritional therapy in the treatment of advanced cancer. Since 1987, Dr. Gonzalez has been in private practice in New York City, treating patients diagnosed with cancer and other serious degenerative illnesses.
