The mineral deficiency your dementia risk may be hiding in plain sight
(NaturalHealth365) Millions of Americans take magnesium for sleep, muscle cramps, or stress. But a major new study suggests this mineral may do far more for your health than most people realize. It may play a real role in protecting your brain.
A large 2026 study followed more than 325,000 adults. It found an association between low magnesium levels and new cases of dementia. The findings suggest that something as simple and affordable as magnesium could be an overlooked tool for brain health as you age.
The study: What researchers found
Researchers looked at health records from a large network of adults ages 50 and older. They found people who had repeatedly tested low for magnesium over a one-year period. Each person was then matched to someone with normal magnesium levels for comparison.
In total, the study included 325,872 adults, split evenly between the two groups. The researchers found a significant association, not proof of cause and effect. People with repeatedly low magnesium had a 33% higher relative risk of developing dementia from any cause.
To put that in perspective, about 1.91% of the low-magnesium group developed dementia, compared to 1.49% of the normal-magnesium group. That is a meaningful difference across a large population, even though the individual risk increase is modest. The link was even stronger for vascular dementia, the type caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, where relative risk was 63% higher.
Low magnesium was also linked to a higher relative risk of stroke and of death during the study period. These results held up even after researchers double-checked them multiple ways.
An earlier study, the well-known Rotterdam Study published in 2017, found something similar. It followed over 9,500 older adults for about eight years and found that both low and high magnesium levels were associated with higher dementia risk.
Why magnesium matters for your brain
Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes throughout your body, and your brain depends on it heavily. Here is what the science points to.
Inflammation. Ongoing low-grade inflammation in the brain is considered a major driver of cognitive decline. Magnesium helps calm inflammation and supports the protective barrier that shields your brain from harmful substances.
Brain cell connections. Every memory and thought depends on connections between brain cells. Magnesium helps build and strengthen these connections, an angle that pairs well with other overlooked substances, like this common mushroom.
Blood flow. The new study found the strongest link with vascular dementia, which is tied to reduced blood flow. Magnesium helps support healthy blood pressure and flexible blood vessels, the same vascular health that regular movement protects elsewhere in the body.
Oxidative stress. Your brain uses a large share of your body’s oxygen, which makes it vulnerable to cell damage over time. Magnesium supports your body’s natural defenses against this kind of damage, helping protect brain cells as you age.
The hidden deficiency most people miss
Here is what should concern you: about half of Americans do not get enough magnesium from their diet. Regular blood tests often miss this problem too, because very little of your body’s magnesium is actually found in your blood. That means you can test “normal” once and still be low, which is why this study looked at repeated testing over time instead of a single test.
Several everyday factors make low magnesium more likely. Modern farming has stripped much of the mineral from our soil, so even healthy diets can fall short.
Processed foods lose most of their magnesium during manufacturing, and ongoing stress burns through your body’s magnesium reserves quickly. Pairing your diet with other inflammation-fighting nutrients, like vitamin C, may help address the same underlying problem from another angle.
Certain common medications can also lower magnesium levels over time, including some used for heartburn, fluid retention, and infections. On top of that, your body absorbs magnesium less efficiently as you get older. This is exactly when brain protection matters most.
How much magnesium should you take?
This is the question people ask most, and the answer depends on your age, sex, and health goals. Health authorities recommend adult men get around 400 to 420 milligrams of magnesium a day.
Adult women are generally advised to get 310 to 320 milligrams a day. Many integrative health practitioners consider this the bare minimum and recommend 400 to 600 milligrams a day for optimal health, especially for adults over 50 or those under chronic stress.
Not all magnesium supplements are equal, and the form you choose matters. Magnesium L-threonate stands out for brain support because it is well studied for reaching brain tissue effectively.
Magnesium glycinate is another strong daily option. It is well absorbed and gentle on the stomach, with a calming effect that many people find helpful.
Magnesium citrate is another widely available and well-absorbed option, though it can have a mild laxative effect at higher doses. Try to avoid magnesium oxide, the cheapest and most common form on store shelves, since your body absorbs very little of it.
Magnesium sulfate, known as Epsom salt, is better used in baths than taken by mouth. A reasonable starting point is 200 to 400 milligrams of supplemental magnesium a day.
Pair this with magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and beans. If brain health is your main goal, ask your healthcare provider about magnesium L-threonate specifically, since it is typically dosed differently than other forms.
Always talk with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement. This is especially important if you have kidney problems or take medications that affect your mineral levels.
What one study can and can’t promise
No single analysis proves that raising your magnesium levels will prevent dementia, and the researchers behind this one were careful to say so. The data does show that a mineral almost never discussed at a routine checkup moved the needle on relative dementia risk across a group of more than 325,000 adults.
