(NaturalHealth365) Recently, the dramatic rise in ADHD and autism among children has made national headlines. Shockingly, the number released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was, 1 in 88 children born today will be diagnosed with autism. But, are those the real numbers or are they much higher?
What the CDC did not make evident was that the numbers they reported, at the end of March 2012, was from data collected in 2008. In truth, the numbers were already four years old!
Furthermore, the CDC’s calculation is based on the number of children who are enrolled in the “Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network”. These estimates from the ADDM Network are based on data collected from health and special education records of children living in just 14 areas of the United States during 2008. Keep in mind, it is not the entire state, simply communities within those states.
Also note, that populous states such as California, New York and Texas are not even part of the calculation.
According to VaxTruth.org, their current calculation shows that the actual number may really be 1 in 54. The CDC is in the middle of collecting data for years 2010-2012 from areas in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and Wisconsin. To find out more information about the work being done in each of the areas, visit – the CDC website.
Is ADHD being ignored by the mainstream media?
In January of 2013, a current figure was released for ADHD but this number did not get quite the publicity coverage that autism did. According to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics, the number of newly diagnosed children with ADHD rose 24 percent from 2001 to 2010. The study confirmed that boys were three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls and found higher family incomes also were associated with the likelihood of ADHD diagnosis. While the CDC shows that children who are on Medicaid are also more likely to be diagnosed.
ADHD is now the most common behavioral problem in children, affecting more than four million school-age kids nationwide. Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina have the highest prevalence of children diagnosed with ADHD in the United States.
”Behavior” medication usage is on the rise – is there an alternative?
Not surprisingly, the use of stimulant drugs prescribed to children with ADHD also increased from 7.8 percent in 2003 to 9.5 percent in 2007.
Natural alternatives to treating both ADHD and autism exist. Changes in diet; eliminating artificial colors and using supplements such as omega-3 and zinc are recommended by the University of Maryland Medical Center as alternative strategies to help with ADHD and autism. Interactive metronome; music therapy; bio-feedback and neuroacoustic therapy have also shown promising results.
In my practice, the use of CEASE Therapy along with diet, REBA, GcMAF, supplements and a variety of other options are used to help children with ADHD and Autism with wonderful results. Each child is different so there is not a one size fits all plan for alternative approaches. Just as a physician prescribing stimulant medications would need to find the right stimulant and the right dosage for your child, not every complementary approach will work the same for every child. Don’t give up! With your perseverance, your child can make lifelong improvements.
