Anesthesia damages mitochondria and brain function

Anesthesia News(NaturalHealth365) Does your child need ear tubes? Does their behavior make them difficult to work with so the dentist suggests anesthesia for cleanings and fillings? Was your child bitten by a dog and is hysterical during the wound cleaning so the doctor suggests putting him under?

Sometimes, in our desire to be more ‘comfortable’, we can put our health at risk.

How does anesthesia harm the brain?

Several studies have suggested that children who are exposed to anesthesia several times during their young lives are at greater risk for learning disabilities and behavior problems. One study, performed by the Mayo Clinic, stated that children with two or more exposures to anesthesia were at greater risk of developing ADHD.

However a study published in Pediatrics stated that a child who is less than three and exposed to anesthesia –just once – can cause harm.

In fact, researchers found these children were twice as likely to develop a language disability and had a 73% increased risk of having trouble with problem solving. They were also more likely to be aggressive or suffer from depression.

Can exposure to anesthesia actually cause autism?

Anesthesiologists want the smoothest experience for their patients and will ask questions to determine the combination needed. According to Gail Szakacs, MD, some children with ASD have abnormal mitochondrial energy production and function that contributes to the severity of their autism. This mitochondrial dysfunction increased the risk for potential damage to the brain and the risk is increased during procedures that require anesthesia.

According to Sym C. Rankin, RN, CRNA and mother of a child with autism states that many parents report that their child regressed after an anesthetic. She notes that many children with ASD have a documented B12 deficiency and that makes nitrous oxide an unsuitable choice these children. She recommends informing your anesthesiologist of all medications, supplements and IgE allergies and suggests using an IV without sedation if your child is able.

The danger of anesthesia for the elderly

A study published earlier this year discovered that general anesthesia can increase the risk of dementia and the development of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease when it’s administered to the elderly – by as much as 15%. Researchers concluded that preoperative evaluations must be taken to determine whether they should even have general anesthesia.

Another study showed the percentage of developing dementia was actually much higher – 35%. Researchers note that some anesthetics might trigger inflammation of neural tissues that lead to cognitive decline. This decline may not be fully realized until several years after the anesthesia was administered.

How can I detoxify from exposure to anesthesia?

At Healing 4 Soul, we use the CEASE protocol to help people detox from anesthesia. As part of the overall plan, homeopathics matching the particular anesthetic can be administered to help the body recover. Supplements and nutritional strategies are also an important part of the detoxification plan. Simple things you can do on your own are (please check with your health practitioner prior to adding products to your supplement schedule):

1. Take a good high potency multi-vitamin that includes vitamin C, beta-carotene, zinc, magnesium, selenium, vitamin E and all of the B vitamins.

2. Supplementing with milk thistle helps by keeping glutathione levels up.

3. Eat fiber rich foods that promote bile secretion such as legumes, broccoli, brussel sprouts, oat bran and apples. If your child is following a special diet, please seek your health practitioner’s advice for dietary modification.

4. Spice up your foods with turmeric and cinnamon.

5. Drink plenty of pure (clean) water.

  • My first husband had “successful” heart surgery surgery but developed dementia soon after. The doctors would never admit it but it was no coincidence I’m sure.

Thanks for the valuable info Sima. I’ve had one “twilight” anesthetic at age 69 for a cataract removal. Now I’m trying to resolve the other eye cataract with herbal solutions, but may have to go back under the knife as so far no luck with that approach. But I’ll see if I can go local or twilight anesthesia at the worst.

I was told this about anesthesia by a young doctor more than 30 years ago. It was after my father already had surgery. Sadly, he developed Alzheimers not too long afterwards. Is it any wonder many of us have little faith or trust in the American medical system? It’s all about the money.
