Whey protein boosts immunity and prevents disease

Volunteers were divided into four equal groups and all were given high-fat meals of soup and bread, but each group’s meal also featured one of four different types of protein: whey isolate, casein – another milk protein – cod, a cold water fish, or gluten.

The team found that volunteers who ate the whey protein meal had lower amounts of fat in their bloodstream, along with increased amounts of insulin, which clears glucose from the blood and regulates sugar levels. They also experienced more complete absorption of the protein, and had slower emptying of their stomachs. In contrast, those who ate the gluten meal had elevated numbers of hydroxyl fatty acids.

And that’s not all – whey protein helps alleviate high blood pressure

Cutting levels of fatty acids in the bloodstream is not the only way that this milk protein combats heart disease. In 2010, a study published in International Dairy Journal showed that when people with elevated blood pressure drank a daily beverage enriched with whey protein, their diastolic and systolic blood pressure came down by as much as 6 points. The reduction began after about a week, and continued for the duration of the 6-week study.

Although a 6-point reduction may not sound very significant, scientists say that even this modest reduction can cut the risk of heart disease and fatal stroke by an impressive 35 to 40 percent.  Whey protein can even reduce your risk of cancer.

Interestingly, the whey protein did not lower levels in those who have normal or low blood pressure – only those with elevated blood pressure were affected. It is almost as if the whey protein “knows” optimal blood pressure levels, and attempts to help the body achieve them.

Some say ADHD is a ‘manufactured’ condition by the psychiatric medical community

‘Frankenfish’ threatens to wipe out wild salmon population

Genetically Modified Salmon News(NaturalHealth365) Proponents of GMOs prefer that you call it “genetically modified salmon.” Opponents of GMOs – including natural health advocates, organic food growers, animal welfare groups, environmentalists, commercial fishermen, restaurateurs and chefs – have settled on a name of their own: “Frankenfish.”

But, by whatever name you call it, AquAdvantage salmon may soon be available in some stores. The FDA, scheduled to finalize its assessment of the genetically modified fish, may be nearing a ruling – almost two decades after AquaBounty Technologies, the developer of the fish, initially sought approval in 1996.

The FDA is facing a firestorm of protest over GM salmon

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already made preliminary findings on GM fish, announcing in December, 2012 that approval of the application would not have a significant impact on the US environment. The agency called AquAdvantage salmon “indistinguishable” from conventionally farmed salmon, and claimed that it is equally safe to eat.

More than 300 agencies, including the Center for Food Safety, have filed statements opposing approval, and 40 members of Congress have called for more rigorous review of the product. During the public comment portion of the proceedings, at least 400,000 people demanded that approval be denied.

And, if FDA approval is granted, a growing number of supermarkets – more than 60 – have announced that they will refuse to sell the GM salmon. The revolt began with select companies such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Aldi’s, and has recently grown to include larger corporations such as Target, Kroger and Safeway. Significantly, retail giant Wal-Mart has refused to comment.

Experts say that GM salmon could decimate the wild salmon population

A primary concern of GM fish foes is accidental escape: if GM salmon escape containment and mingle with native salmon, their larger size would give them an unfair advantage in competing for food. Although the fish are bred to be sterile, the FDA itself concedes that up to 5 percent of GM fish are actually fertile.

According to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences, the accidental release of as few as 60 genetically modified salmon into a wild population of 60,000 would cause the demise of the native fish – a devastating scenario. In addition, opponents of GM salmon fear that safety concerns have not been fully addressed, and say that research on the fish has been flawed and incomplete.

Educated consumers are the most opposed to GM salmon

The Non-GMO Report cites a 2010 poll revealing that 81 percent of restaurant chefs surveyed oppose genetically altered food. And, perhaps more tellingly, a 2010 Washington Post poll showed that 79 percent of consumers say they won’t eat GM fish.

What, exactly, is genetically modified salmon?

To create the AquAdvantage salmon, developers introduced a growth gene from a Chinook salmon and a “promoter” gene from another fish, the eelpout. This genetic manipulation spurs production of growth hormone, causing the salmon to grow about twice as fast as conventional salmon.

Although 75 percent of the food on supermarket shelves and in restaurants contains some GMO ingredients – and the majority of corn and soybean crops are now GMO – this would be the first genetically engineered animal to be approved for human consumption.

Advocates claim that the fish can be grown by land-based farming, lowering transportation costs and resulting in cheaper production. They assert that In addition to benefiting the environment, the use of GM fish will allow more people to take advantage of fish as a healthy alternative to red meat and a rich source of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids. Supporters of GM fish say they would also ease pressure on wild fisheries.

Warning: GM fish do not have to be identified by label

AquaBounty CEO Ron Stotish has publicly stated that once consumers see, touch and taste the fish, they will “wonder what all the fuss was about.” The statement is not only condescending but illogical – unless laws are passed that require GMO foods to be labeled, consumers will have no way of knowing exactly what they are seeing, touching and tasting.

Instead, they will be forced to participate in a sort of perverse shell game, perpetrated by the biotech companies and food retailers who choose to sell GMO fish: which fish on the shelf is GM? It’s a guessing game: some of it, all of it or none of it?

If “Frankenfish” does obtain FDA approval – and you want to avoid meeting it in the seafood aisle – opt for fish labeled USDA Organic; the use of GMOs is not permitted in foods labeled in this fashion. As usual, let the buyer beware.

New study: Organic food has more antioxidants

Organic Food More Nutritious(NaturalHealth365) We all know that toxic pesticides – found on conventionally-grown produce – contribute to inflammation and every known chronic disease. These dangerous chemicals are being sprayed on our food – every day – and cause massive collateral damage to the environment and human health.

Yet, pro-GMO activists and most of the major food producers of the world would have us believe that chemically-raised produce is ‘perfectly safe’. This is such a lie and, now, we have the scientific proof to back up such a claim.

Fantastic NEW study reveals the value of organic food

A comprehensive review of past studies clearly indicate that organically grown food have much higher levels of antioxidants and lower levels of pesticides compared to conventionally grown produce.

In fact, Carlo Leifert, a professor of ecological agriculture at Newcastle University in England (lead researcher) said: “If you buy organic fruits and vegetables, you can be sure you have, on average, a higher amount of antioxidants at the same calorie level.” And, although the researchers are ‘not able’ to make health claims – the results are quite impressive and the message is very clear.

Anyone, in their right mind, interested in preventing – even reversing – disease would want to reduce their pesticide exposure and increase the consumption of antioxidants. According to The Organic Trade Association, in 2013, United States sales of organic food were approximately $32.3 billion (around 4% of the total market). Clearly, people are waking up to the importance of clean food for optimal health.

New study proves that organic food has superior nutritional value

This new study is scheduled to be published (next week) in the British Journal of Nutrition and its findings are really impressive. Researchers discovered that, over all, ‘organic crops contained 17 percent more antioxidants than conventionally grown crops.’ In some classes of antioxidants – the difference was much greater. For example, a group of compounds known as flavanones were 69 percent higher in the organic produce samples.

At a cost of $429,000 – paid for by the European Union and the Sheepdrove Trust, a British charity that supports organic farming research – the scientists said the money came with ‘no strings’ attached and the research passed all the rigors of scientific peer review for publication.

Do you really want to eat weed and bug killing chemicals?

In light of recent government testing and scientific studies – we really need to be more careful with how we feed our family.  According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), these are the ‘dirtiest’ conventionally-grown fruits and vegetables to avoid at all costs:

Don’t be overwhelmed by this information – just start cleaning up your diet and immediate living space as soon as possible.

Even more disturbing is the fact that it either directly causes – or contributes to – 1,000 deaths across the country every day.  If you’re looking for a simple way to avoid these problems – keep reading.

Educate yourself and avoid needless suffering

Most of the time there is no identifiable cause for high blood pressure, although being overweight, leading a sedentary life, eating too much salt, drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes all can raise your risk.  In some cases, an underlying medical condition – such as kidney disease, adrenal gland tumors, thyroid disease, and sleep apnea – are responsible.

At what point is blood pressure considered “too high?”

According to most conventionally-trained physicians, a blood pressure reading of 120 over 80 is considered normal. Levels of 120 to 129 over 80 to 90 are considered “prehypertension,” while readings of 140 to 159 over 90 to 99 are categorized as Stage 1 hypertension.  Finally, readings north of 160 over 100 are considered Stage 2.

Doctors prescribe a wide range of drugs to control blood pressure, including beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors and thiazide diuretics. Although these medications can be effective, they feature side effects. Thiazide diuretics, for example, can wreak havoc with levels of beneficial HDL, raise triglycerides and total cholesterol, plus increase your risk of diabetes.

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to lower your blood pressure safely and naturally.

Watermelon’s amino acids have dramatic effects on blood pressure

You may want to simply start snacking on watermelon.  In a study conducted at Florida State University and published in the American Journal of Hypertension, researchers found that watermelon significantly reduced blood pressure in people who were overweight. Two of watermelon’s constituents, the amino acids citrulline and arginine, had a positive impact on aortic blood pressure, and reduced myocardial oxygen demand.

An earlier study, published in 2010 in American Journal of Hypertension, demonstrated that L-citrulline and L-arginine extracted from watermelon had vasodilatory (or blood vessel widening) effects that improved arterial function and lowered pressure in people who were prehypertensive.

If watermelon isn’t readily available, citrulline malate can be taken as a supplement.

Olive oil inhibits an enzyme responsible for raising blood pressure

Olive oil, a key component of the popular Mediterranean diet, is widely acknowledged to reduce the risk of heart disease.  Generally speaking, researchers are finding that healthy minimally-processed fats have blood pressure-lowering effects.  I love coconut oil  and it’s good for the heart and brain function.

It turns out that raw olive oil – a popular ingredient in salad dressings – really is a perfect way to flavor your greens.  In a new study published in May 2014 in PNAS, the Journal of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers found that olive oil combines with nitrite and nitrates in lettuce and other vegetables to form nitro fatty acids, or NFAs. These fatty acids inhibit an enzyme, soluble epoxide hydrolase, which raises blood pressure.

The good news just keeps coming with olive oil.  In addition to lowering blood pressure and promoting cardiovascular health, it has been linked to protection against breast cancer and diabetes.

Vitamin D: the “sunshine vitamin” offers blood pressure benefits

In a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical study presented at a 2012 meeting of the European Society of Hypertension, researchers found that vitamin D supplementation in wintertime helped lower the blood pressure of hypertensive European patients who were low in this essential nutrient. The team noted that many Europeans have low vitamin D levels – particularly in February, when natural sunlight is in short supply.

According to the Life Extension Foundation, vitamin D accomplishes its beneficial effect by suppressing the expression of renin, a blood pressure hormone. In order to achieve adequate vitamin D Levels, which LEF typifies as between 60 and 70 nanograms per milliliter, 6,000 IU per day is the recommended dosage.

Reduce your intake of salt – especially conventional varieties

The CDC says that if the average national daily intake of salt were reduced from 3,400 milligrams to the 2,300 milligrams recommended in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the number of people with high blood pressure could be cut by as much as 11 million, saving the nation $18 billion dollars annually – along with countless lives. Of course, the Mayo Clinic does not identify the difference between overly-processed table salt (with no minerals) and sea salt – which is loaded with essential minerals.

The Mayo Clinic advises no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium a day for those who have been diagnosed with hypertension, or are over 50.  You can control your sodium intake by carefully reading food labels.  After all, most excessive sodium intake is due to the consumption of processed food.  If you really want to protect your cardiovascular system – avoid foods with a label and eat mostly natural, unprocessed food.

Keep in mind, many high-sodium foods are also loaded with chemical preservatives, sugar and empty calories.

To break a dependency on the salt shaker, try some fresh spices like rosemary and thyme or sprinkle some fresh, organic lemon juice on your food.  These natural salt alternatives are bursting with antioxidants and delicious flavor.

Eliminate toxic ‘trans fats’ from your diet

It’s best to adopt a “zero tolerance” policy with these harmful fats, which raise blood pressure and increase your risk of a heart attack, cancer and diabetes. Tip-offs to their presence are the words “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” fats on food labels.  Bottom line – avoid these toxic fats at all costs.

Many health experts recommend the ‘DASH Diet’, which was created to help lower blood pressure, and has been clinically shown to be effective.  The emphasis is on fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy products.  These foods are loaded with blood pressure lowering nutrients like, potassium, magnesium, calcium and fiber.  Just remember – shop organically as much as you can.

Of course, you should never attempt to treat your high blood pressure – or any other medical condition – with foods and supplements unless you are under the supervision of a trusted, medical professional. Discuss dietary changes and nutritional supplements with your doctor.  If he or she can’t help you – find another doctor.

Hypertension is a serious health issue that can easily be resolved with diet and lifestyle modifications. Focus on positive (healthy) habits and the symptoms of disease will fade away.
