(NaturalHealth365) We all know how great massage can feel.  However, research out of Duke Health has confirmed significant benefits of regular, whole-body massages for anyone suffering from arthritis pain in their joints.

Now, all we need to do is get insurance companies to pay attention to this report.

For this study, 200 participants with arthritis of the knees were assessed. They were divided randomly into three groups, either receiving a full body massage once a week, a light-touch control treatment or no massage at all.

How to get arthritis pain relief without the risk of unwanted side effects

After eight weeks, the groups were randomized again to receive either massage or light-touch treatment weekly, or no treatment at all over the remaining 52 week study period.

Every 2 months throughout the study, patients with arthritis pain were assessed for their levels of pain, stiffness and functional limitations. They answered a questionnaire that included queries regarding how well they were able to walk, stand up from a lying or sitting position, climb stairs or get out of a car.

After eight weeks, the researchers noted that massage made a significant difference in these areas as compared with those who received only light touch or none at all. After the one-year study period, massages received every other week maintained the arthritis pain and mobility improvements that had been observed at eight weeks.

Pretty sweet, right?  And, for those curious, the findings were reported in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

Natural solution for over 30 million Americans

The research results indicate that massage is a safe and highly effective way to help manage the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis.

Keep in mind, osteoarthritis affects more than 30 million Americans and is a leading cause of disability.  Of course, medications can be taken for the pain, but they often come with horrible side effects including nausea, heart attacks and kidney failure.

Conversely, massage has no negative side effects and can bring additional improvements beyond just arthritis pain relief.  The long list of benefits of regular massage include stress relief, less muscle tension, enhanced athletic performance, faster recovery from injury, improved mood, better sleep, increased flexibility plus much more.

Fact: Massage therapy can give relief to many chronic health conditions

An increasing amount of research is also supporting the benefits of massage for other health issues, including faster healing of burn scars, the easing of cancer treatment side effects, and relief from fibromyalgia and other chronic conditions.

Remember, it’s a perfectly safe and effective treatment option for both chronic and acute pain.

So, if you suffer from arthritis pain, joint stiffness or mobility problems, consider adding massage to your weekly routine.  It will help relieve your pain and other symptoms naturally while also promoting relaxation; an improved outlook on life; and a generally enhanced quality of life.
