When the mice were fed a diet containing insufficient amounts of vitamin C, their bodies naturally made Lipoprotein(a) to repair the vascular walls. As a result, they developed atherosclerosis and heart issues.

Researchers found that the level and degree of heart disease was directly related to the subjects’ intake and blood levels of vitamin C. The mice that ingested the highest amounts of vitamin C had the least amount of Lipoprotein(a) produced to repair their arteries. As a result, they had the most minimal atherosclerotic lesions and the strongest hearts.

The researchers have come to the conclusion that vitamin C could be the key to avoiding heart disease and cardiovascular issues. While having healthy HDL and LDL cholesterol levels is still important, it may not be as foundational to heart health as was once believed.
