FDA warns that fluoroquinolone antibiotics can cause permanent nerve damage

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

antibiotic-pills(NaturalHealth365) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently came out with a stronger warning against a popular class of drugs called fluoroquinolone antibiotics.  Unfortunately, this warning is too late for patients already suffering from permanent side effects caused by this dangerous category of antibiotics.

Sold under the brand names Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox, fluoroquinolone antibiotics are taken by an estimated 26 million Americans each year. The new FDA directive will force manufacturers to provide a stronger warning regarding their use.  Keep in mind, when the FDA issues a warning, you know the drug is really toxic and dangerous.

FDA warns: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics offer ‘serious side effects’ which outweigh the benefits

In May, the FDA announced it was requiring manufacturers of these drugs to include a tougher black box warning. Following an advisory committee meeting held in November, the FDA issued the new requirement, warning that the agency now believes the serious side effects associated with fluoroquinolone antibacterial drugs outweigh the benefits for many patients.

That’s strong language coming from an agency that often seems to turn a blind eye toward evidence suggesting serious health risks associated with any pharmaceutical substance.  The agency had previously added boxed warnings for fluoroquinolones back in 2008 – specifically for tendon rupture and tendinitis. A second warning came again in 2013 for peripheral neuropathy, a type of permanent nerve damage.

Adverse reactions to fluoroquinolones can lead to permanent damage

While the list of dangerous side effects of Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones is long and varied, these antibiotics are known to be a primary cause of peripheral neuropathy. This condition can lead to nerve damage, with symptoms such as muscle tingling, numbness and muscle weakness. In advanced cases, the condition causes persistent burning pain, muscle wasting, paralysis, respiratory issues, and organ dysfunction – which can lead to organ failure.

But that isn’t the entire story. A number of additional adverse reactions to the drugs have been identified over the years, including diarrhea, nausea, migraines, abnormal liver function, vomiting, skin rash, abdominal pain, and pain in the extremities. Fluoroquinolones have also been linked to cardiovascular problems, including palpitation, ventricular ectopy, atrial flutter, hypertension, angina, cerebral thrombosis, myocardial infarction, and cardiopulmonary arrest.

In addition to an alarming number of problems with the central nervous system, these antibiotics are known to cause gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, renal and respiratory problems, among others.  And, while many of the fluoroquinolones have been removed from the marketplace because of their substantial side effects, Levaquin, Cipro and Avelox remain in use.

Other treatment options avoid use of antibiotics entirely

While the FDA’s warning recommends patients with bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections and sinusitis seek out other treatment options, the implication is still that those ‘other options’ should include antibiotics or similar medications. But in addition to risking horrific side effects, the use of any antibiotic puts healthy gastrointestinal microbes in danger, compromising the body’s natural immune system and leaving it open to cancer and other illnesses. Destroying healthy bacteria in the gut also leads to poor nutrient absorption.

But, in reality, there are safer alternatives to antibiotics.  Among the most effective (natural) alternative are vitamin C, oregano oil, olive leaves, turmeric, garlic, and ginger.  Another natural combatant against illness is to maintain a healthy immune system by maintaining a healthy body.

Never forget: Good health begins with great nutrition.  Be sure your diet consists of natural, organic and GMO-free foods, with plenty of green, leafy vegetables for a natural, healthy immune system.

The more consumers recognize this fact, the less they will demand these drugs. I have heard friends ask the doctor for antibiotics. This is not a route to health. These drugs are disastrous, because the side effects may happen years later.
Once you change the gut bacteria you change your future health. It is very difficult to replace the good bacteria you lost while taking them.

Antibiotics were considered unmatched, unbeatable and unbelievable in fighting bacterial infections, when they were first introduced.

We have come a long way in changing that perception. The drug companies saw a way to profit off any perceived benefit by flooding the market and having doctors over prescribe these drugs.

    • eyesandears

The primary focus concerning antibiotics has been on the over-prescribing, which has led to bacterial resistance. Receiving little attention, however, Is how the more recent proliferative addition of fluoride to medications (to facilitate uptake efficiency) has made them more toxic, hence the drastic increase in accompanying debilitating and permanent ‘side’ effects.

You can get rid of infections with vitamin C at high doses, but you usually can’t get rid of nerve damage. What a poor trade off.

  • GoldenAutumn

I wonder how many doctors have been told this by the drug reps. Something tells me they probably haven’t and will continue to prescribe these medications.

“While the FDA’s warning recommends PATIENTS with bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections and sinusitis SEEK OUT OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS…” Your comment precisely summed my reaction as well.

The FDA is ‘gaming’ once again…or, more aptly stated, playing with people’s lives. In directing their ‘warning’ to the patient, and placing responsibility in that direction, they have fulfilled their agency ‘obligation,’ while allowing ‘business’ to continue as usual. If it’s believed that the serious side effects outweigh the benefits, the logical response would be to pull the drug from the market.

First off let me say “PRAISE GOD” for an answered prayer!!!! Hallelujah.
I AM one of the several hundred thousand people who was severely injured by this class of drugs. 3 tablets total…. set off a tsunami of devastating injuries to my muscle skeletal system, nervous system….leaving me unable to stand, walk. The 2 years of wheel chair, crutches, and crawling on the floor with knee pads to drag groceries down the hall of my building to my apartment. The awful stabbing nerve pains in my my leg, foot, arms and face. I wont list all the horrors….it is too much for me to revisit…….BUT this is absolutely a victory. And I have tears of Joy and despair that these horrible horrible !@#$% Bayer, Johnson & Johnson etc. Knew All, and suppressed the data, ignored the screams from the public like me who were so cruelly maimed. And now we have all our children being vaccinated into autism….It so BARBARIC and Evil! The CDC whistle blower still is not enough!!! The parents, the kids, and folk like me are not enough!?? We are supposed to just DO, EAT, Think, & Take what they say. No way no how. Our God gives us Life and freedom from the rulers of this world who care for nothing but their love of money.

ALL my comrades, out there will feel some comfort from this news, BUT without the medical community as a whole KNOWING about this it will not save our other brothers and sisters.

And they are still on the market because……..???

Antibiotics – Kill the host, create ‘super’ bacteria. They have little other purpose except profit.

Lame FDA instead of RECALLING all these wretched antibiotics just issues a call for ‘black box warning” ? If damage far outweighs a benefit, is that still a medicine ?

  • 1555

I agree, a major lawsuit is in place. Strep throat is certainly not a reason to pull out dangerous “heavy guns” antibiotics.

  • Truth4All

No. Don’t EVER take it EVER, EVER, EVER. The Natural Choices will take care of anything. Sadly many drs are going to write that prescription whether there’s any presence of bacteria or not. That prescription pad has to come out. Short of broken bones, ruptured spleen, traumatic head injury… you get my drift…. Don’t go to a Pharma doc.

  • Truth4All

All of us who have been floxed, are casualties of the Poisoning of America by Big Pharma.
And if the damage is so bad, and you must go on disability to survive after you lose your job…. They make you go to the Pharma Doc every three months the whole time you are waiting for approval, generally getting turned down the first 2 times you apply and appeal, this can drag on and on as you suffer and HAVE to continue to go to the useless hated place where the “drs” practice on you. It’s a big racket. They flox you, make you have to apply for disability, HAVE to see a dr every three months, more money for them and the lawyers!!! They’re all in cahoots. And if you complain, of symptoms after taking the drugs… they’ll say it’s Plantars faciitis or something not associated with the drugs side affects.
This is a sick system. Take Natural and Homeopathic remedies.
I hear tens units help Neuropathy.

  • Jayebird58

$$$$$$$! Follow the money. There’s your answer!

  • Jayebird58

I got Cipro’d! I now have neuropathy and my dr’s ignore me and say it’s all in my head! WTF can I do about it?

    • Truth4All

I know that Cipro is wicked too. I got floxed and cipro’d, and flagyl causes neuropathy… I will NEVER take any of their sh@ again as long as I live. There is a national epidemic of neuropathy that NO ONE talks about… and the drs have nothing in their bags of tricks to deal with the toxic aftermath of their prescribing misery and death. They make me sick.
I have heard that a good TENS UNIT may help in stimulating nerve rejuvenation. I haven’t been able to afford one yet. Diet that supports the nervous system repair… GABA EASE by VITAICA, is good to ease the nerve ending firings. God Bless You. Oh the suffering these Pharma docs cause. GRRRRRRRRR,
