Higher vitamin C levels support better brain health

For the study, the participants undertook comprehensive dietary and health assessments, including dietary vitamin C intake and fasting plasma vitamin C concentrations. Around 62 percent were found to have inadequate plasma vitamin C concentrations, with more men than women experiencing this condition.
The people with the highest blood concentrations of plasma vitamin C were found to have the lowest levels of cognitive impairment.
Another Australian study of vitamin C status and cognitive functioning determined that vitamin C plays a key role in the development of many key brain components, including neurons.
Vitamin C fuels tissues, nerves and neurotransmitters crucial to brain health
Studies were conducted on both healthy participants and cognitively impaired individuals, including those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Vitamin C status was assessed based upon diet and plasma vitamin C levels.
Cognition tests such as the Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE) were administered. Just as in the CHALICE Cohort Study, better cognitive function was associated with higher blood serum vitamin C levels.
Vitamin C has been associated with healthy brain and nerve functioning in other studies as well.
