Print Friendly, PDF & Email

(NaturalHealth365) With all the TV advertisements, so-called fitness ‘experts,’ doctors, and health publications, many people are brainwashed into believing that fat is the ‘greatest enemy’ when it comes to weight loss.  But, in reality, nothing could be further from the truth.  Healthy fats can actually help you lose weight and greatly improve your overall health. (as you’ll soon see.)

Truth be told, the low-fat recommendations that we hear about are not as effective as most Americans are made to believe.  If you think this is not the case, take a look at this article explaining how low carbohydrate foods offer a metabolic advantage that promotes faster weight loss.

High carbohydrate foods spike glucose levels – leading to high levels of insulin, a hormone responsible for controlling fat storage in the body whenever glucose is in excess.

Lose weight by ‘ending the fear of fat,’ study says

In a study known as PREDIMED, a group of researchers assessed the long-term effects of high vegetable fat, high fat, and the Mediterranean diet on waist circumference and body weight among elderly people – most of whom were obese or overweight – with a high risk for cardiovascular ailments.

PREDIMED is the Spanish acronym for Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea, meaning “Prevention with Mediterranean Diet” when translated to English.  A total of 7,447 persons were randomly assigned to one of the following interventions:

(a) Mediterranean diet with extra-virgin olive oil supplement

(b) Mediterranean diet with nuts supplement

(c) A control diet composed of low-fat foods

The two groups under the Mediterranean diet experienced reduced central adiposity and body weight in comparison to their colleagues under the control diet. This discovery dented a big blow to the popular belief of avoiding fats to achieve an ideal weight.

There are more goodies in the fat package that await your discovery, and I urge you to keep reading in order to learn more.

Consuming healthy fats can support heart health

Heart health and fats might seem worlds apart, but this is not the case because favoring carbohydrates instead of fats takes you a step closer to coronary heart disease (CHD).

As we’ve mentioned, carbohydrates – especially the commonly consumed processed varieties – are known culprits when it comes to the spiking of blood sugar levels, which in turn increases the risk of CHD.  Minimizing carbohydrate intake and replacing them with fats that keep coronary heart disease at bay is the best decision you can ever make.

Healthy fats help your brain to stay sharp

The brain is composed of 60% fat and 25% of this is cholesterol explaining why fats are essential for proper brain function.  In fact, saturated fats enhance faster travel of signals between brain cells, and deficiencies in this important component are known to slow down communication.

A significant drop in HDL cholesterol is likely to result in cognitive decline that causes subtle changes like looking for spectacles that are already on top of your head, or not remembering why you entered your bedroom.

Simply put, don’t let the mainstream media or Western medicine fool you – healthy fats have great value for your overall well-being.  Go to your local health food store or farmers market and try adding some healthy fats to your diet – including: organic avocados, extra virgin olive oil, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and 100% grass-fed meats.
